Atlau was known as Guriev until 1991 and is the capital of the Atlau region of Kazakhstan. Atlau's origins can be traced back to the 1640s. Originally, it was a fortification town at the mouth of the Yaik River, where it flows into the Caspian Sea. The Yaik River will eventually be renamed by Catherine II as the Ural River. It is a boundary between Eurasia.
