CARTAGENA, COLOMBIA

Cartagena (Cartagena de Indias) is a major port city established in 1533 and located on the northern coast of Colombia on the Caribbean coast. It is strategically located between the Magdalena and the Sinnux rivers and became the main port for trade between Spain and its overseas empires, establishing its important position in the early 1540s. During the colonial era, it was an important port for Peruvian silver exports to Spain and for the import of enslaved Africans under the asiento system.
