As one of the few Portuguese colonies in Morocco, El Jadida on the Atlantic side was listed as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations for its “early example of the combination of Renaissance ideas and Portuguese architectural techniques,” and the Portuguese built Mazagan Castle in 1514.
