The overlook is on NM-502, just a few miles east of Los Alamos. Since it is a pull-off on the highway, this doesn't require taking any detours and you can judge for yourself if you want to stop here f...
After you've admired the view, turn around and look at the cliff face behind you. There's a very steep road cut into the cliff. That's the original highway, which was much more treacherous!

Short drive from Bandelier (highly recommend) to Los Alamos. Stopped off the road with plenty of parking. Worth the time to stop and relax and take it all in.
Panoramic view worth the drive up, you'll need to follow the map directions carefully as the overlook is hidden away a bit behind a school and residential neighborhood.
