Jiaohe Post Scenic Area—Source of Karez

Jiaoheyi was an important post station on the Silk Road during the Tang Dynasty. The Jiaoheyi Attraction is equipped with: post station meeting hall, post station house, horse caravan, beacon tower, Karez source, world's largest drying room, grape corridor, etc. The Attraction presents this period of history in multiple forms, reproducing the ancient way of transmitting information through the five scenes of Chang'an City, Jingzhao Post Station, Liangzhou Post Station, Yumen Pass, and Jiaohe Post Station. Due to the dry climate, little rain and lack of water in Turpan, the local working people of all ethnic groups creatively guided groundwater to the surface for irrigation and domestic water use, which is called "Kanerjing", meaning "well hole". There are 1,784 Karez in Xinjiang with a total length of 5,272 kilometers. There were 1,237 Karez in Turpan in history, and only 214 Karez with water are still there. Karez is composed of four parts: vertical well, culvert, open channel and reservoir. The Karez in Jiaoheyi Scenic Attraction is called "Keqike Aji" Karez, which has a history of more than 570 years.

The diameter of the Karez Source Scenic Area is 20 meters. You can take the sightseeing elevator directly to the source of the 50-meter-deep Karez and experience firsthand the "underground canal" created by the ancients with just a shovel, a pickaxe and a basket. It is known as one of the three great human projects in ancient China, along with the Great Wall and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal.
