A Ride in Spain's Central Highlands ~ Toledo (Region)
Located at the foot of the Calderico ridge, it boasts a majestic castle with a magnificent donjon and several typical La Mancha windmills. Five of the twelve windmills retain their mechanisms, including one known as "Sancho" (named after one of the protagonists in the novel "Don Quixote").
Other treasures of Consuegra include the Town Hall; the Corredores, home to the Municipal Museum; the Casa de Telcha; the Church of San Juan; and the Church of San Cristo de Veracruz, a museum dedicated to offerings. This fortress was built during the early years of the Reconquista. During the reign of King Alfonso VIII, it was ceded to the brotherhood that founded the Grand Monastery of La Mancha. It boasts double walls and several towers. Consuegra's Renaissance-style Town Hall is located in the Plaza de España, where houses have wooden balconies.
