Canada 10-Day Self-Drive Tour Guide Vol. 4
Few things can make a city on another continent famous like a K-drama—perhaps only *Memories of the Alhambra* starring Hyun Bin, or *Guardian: The Lonely and Great God* starring Gong Yoo. As our wheels rolled over the breath of autumn, the St. Lawrence River spread out on our right like flowing silk. When the steel cables of the Quebec Bridge sliced through the clouds, the Château Frontenac suddenly emerged from the mist on the opposite bank—its green copper roof like emeralds soaked in dew, and the maple leaf flags hanging from the city walls snapping in the wind at a 45-degree angle.
🗺️ Must-visit route
1️⃣ Emerald crown in the morning light
The east side of Dufferin Terrace at 7:30 AM (near the Château Frontenac sign) is empty. As the first golden rays pierce through the clouds, the building's silhouette is gilded, and the maple leaf flags on the city walls begin to write the wind's secret code.
2️⃣ Mirror maze of the St. Lawrence River
3️⃣ French whispers of the red brick walls
At the southernmost end of Rue de la Porte, the maple leaves hanging on the ochre-red city walls form a wonderful dialogue with the bronze cannons. When the midday light cuts across at an angle, the moss in the cracks of the brick walls casts mysterious totems.
4️⃣ Cinematic montage of the spiral staircase
The wooden spiral staircase on the outside of the castle's east wing (near Auberge Saint-Antoine) is a hidden gem. Remember to look back as you spiral upward. Afternoon sunlight slants in through the stained-glass windows, casting dancing light spots on the steps.
5️⃣ Afternoon tea at Dufferin Terrace
Take advantage of the gentlest sunlight after 3:00 PM, sit inside Le Château restaurant (window seats require advance booking), order a maple syrup latte, and watch the red leaves of Île d'Orléans on the opposite bank sway in your cup.
