| Since ancient times, there has been only one road in Huashan Mountain -> Longkong Plank Road -> East Peak (Chaoyang Peak) |
Since ancient times, Mount Hua was famed for having only one path to its summit, setting it apart from the other four sacred mountains. This sole, perilous trail earned the saying, “There has only been one road to Mount Huashan since ancient times.” It wasn’t until the 1990s that the opening of the “Smart Huashan Road” in Huangfu Valley introduced a second route for hikers. Known as one of the most dangerous mountains in the world, Mount Huashan’s original route includes many of its most thrilling spots, offering climbers a truly adventurous and unforgettable experience.

The Changkong Plank Road is situated on the eastern side of the mountainside of Huashan’s South Peak. Constructed by embedding stone piles into the cliff face and laying wooden boards on top, it offers a heart-pounding experience of walking along a vertical cliff—an adventure that feels like walking in midair. The plank road is divided into three sections: the upper section features guardrails for safety; the middle section consists of iron bars bridging gaps in the cliff, resembling a hanging ladder; in the lower section, visitors must press close to the rock wall, grip iron chains with both hands, and carefully shuffle sideways along the narrow wooden boards.

East Peak, one of Huashan Mountain’s main summits, takes its name from its position on the eastern side of the range. At its top is a spacious viewing platform, perched high above the surrounding cliffs, offering sweeping, awe-inspiring views. It's one of the most renowned spots to watch the sunrise on Mount Huashan. As the crimson sun rises and bathes the jagged peaks in golden light, the scene becomes nothing short of breathtaking. This spot is known as Chaoyang Terrace, earning East Peak the alternate name “Chaoyang Peak.” There's a local saying: “Only one in ten days rewards you with a sunrise,” making it a rare and lucky sight to witness.
