Bank holidays are usually scattered across the calendar and refer to the national public holidays in the UK, which means many places in the country will be shut. On bank holidays, most shops and schools will close, and places of business will also generally shut down while public transport is reduced.
The Heart Edinburgh's Old Town: The Royal Mile
The Royal Mile is the name given to a succession of streets which constitutes the primary thoroughfare between the Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Old Town Edinburgh. Interestingly the length of the royal mile is about 1.81 km which is approximately one Scotts mile long; it is longer than the English mile but hasn’t been used for measurements since the 18th century. Geographically royal mile starts at the plug of an extinct volcano where the Edinburgh castle sits and goes downhill on a gentle crag and tail formation which was created when the glacial ice melted during the last ice age. The royal mile is made up of six distinct areas and their respective main streets. Starting at the top (west) the thoroughfare goes downhill where the streets Castlehill, Lawnmarket, High Street and Canongate form the royal mile in that order.

The palace of holyroodhouse is the official residence of the monarch and has housed many generations of the royal family. However the lavish palace as we see it today is not what it started out to be and has seen its share of transformations over the centuries. Interestingly the palace started out not as a royal place but as an abbey which can still be seen today as part of the palace grounds. According to the legends, in 1128 AD, David I established a monastery for the Augustinian order and the name ‘holy rood’ means ‘holy cross’. Originally the name Holyroodhouse belonged to the guest house maintained by the Abbot of Holyrood. The construction of a new residence beside the abbey was started in 1501 by James IV for himself and his new queen Margaret Tudor.
