Wuzhen is an ancient town in the south of the Yangtze River with a long history in the northern suburbs of Tongxiang. The main scenic area is divided into Xizha and Dongzha. Enjoying the night view of Xizha, riding a rowboat and watching folk performances are experiences that tourists will not miss. This is also the filming location of "A Time to Live and a Time to Die" starring Huang Lei and Rene Liu.
Dongzha and Xizha are about 1.5 kilometers apart. If you want to visit both Dongzha and Xizha in one day, you should arrive in Wuzhen early in the morning and visit Dongzha first (2-3 hours), then start visiting Xizha after lunch and continue to visit Xizha at night to see the night view. If you have two more days, you can consider spending one day in Xizha and one day in Dongzha.

Highlights of Xizha and Dongzha
You can easily spend a full day wandering the stone-paved streets of Xizha—sampling local snacks like stinky tofu, Dingsheng cake, and sister-in-law cake, or visiting cultural spots such as Zhaoming Academy and the Old Post Office. A peaceful rowboat ride through the canals is another great way to experience the charm of the water town.
If time allows, don't miss a night tour of Xizha. The illuminated waterways, arched bridges, and whitewashed walls create a magical evening scene. Rowing through the quiet canals under the lights is especially memorable. Afterward, you can relax with a drink at a local bar, watch an open-air classic movie, or enjoy a traditional flower drum opera performance.
In contrast, Dongzha is smaller but more authentic in everyday life. Local residents still live here, and you can visit attractions like the Shadow Puppet Theater, Sanbai Liquor Workshop, Xiuzhen Temple, and Mao Dun’s Former Residence. Folk performances such as boxing on boats and pole-climbing on boats offer a deeper look into the area's traditions. A shuttle bus connects Xizha and Dongzha for easy transit.
Food and Specialties
Braised lamb and pickled duck are signature dishes in Wuzhen, with lamb being especially well-known. Popular restaurants include Hanlin Mansion and Fengyuan Restaurant in Dongzha, and Yusheng Restaurant and the Braised Duck Restaurant in Xizha. Street snacks like fried stinky tofu, Dingsheng cake, and sister-in-law cakes are also worth trying.
For souvenirs, consider local specialties like handmade Three White Liquor, Tao Xuchang brand bean paste, finely crafted wood and bamboo carvings, or items made from traditional blue printed cloth, such as scarves, wallets, umbrellas, coasters, and pendants. You’ll find many specialty shops along the main streets.
Accommodation
The Xizha Scenic Area offers a range of hotels and inns, all officially managed. Prices vary, and staying inside the scenic area gives you easy access to attractions and a better experience of the night views.
There are also many lodging options outside the scenic area, often at more affordable rates, though slightly less convenient for night tours.

Located in Tongxiang’s northern suburb, Puyuan is a historic Jiangnan water town with over 700 years of heritage. It blends traditional charm with modern vitality, featuring ancient architecture, riverside pavilions, and a deep-rooted silk culture. Key landmarks include Fushan Temple, Shufang Zen Garden, Pufuma’s Residence, and Yue Family Mansion. Historic sites like Beigeng Tower and the Meijing Theater reflect Puyuan’s rich cultural legacy.
The town’s silk industry began with Pu Feng in the Yuan Dynasty and flourished under his descendants, earning the reputation of “ten thousand pieces of silk a day” and “the best silk in the world.” Today, Puyuan is the world’s largest wool sweater distribution center, known for its fully integrated fashion industry cluster.
Winding alleys paved with bluestone, preserved canals, and old shopfronts still echo the Ming and Qing era. Modern revitalization has transformed Puyuan into a major cultural tourism hub, three times the size of the Wuzhen scenic area, welcoming over 8 million visitors annually.
Visitors can explore artisan shops like Lao Buyi and Yongji Stainless Steel, enjoy local treats such as sesame cakes, siu mai, and green rice balls, or simply soak in the atmosphere with a cup of night watchman tea. The blend of ancient craftsmanship, fashion, and Jiangnan elegance makes Puyuan a living showcase of history and style.

Tongxiang Museum is located at No. 399 Huanyuan Road in Tongxiang City. The building features a modern design with one underground level and three floors above ground, shaped in a striking hyperbolic form. Viewed from above, it resembles both a cocoon and a footprint—the cocoon symbolizing Tongxiang’s identity as the "Hometown of Sericulture" and the "Home of Silk", and the footprint representing an invitation for visitors to explore this land of deep history and rich culture.
