Journey
Huguo Suiliangwang Temple (Qi Laoye Temple) -> Zuiyuan Gallery-> Shipi Lane -> Zhongfu Hall -> Xiyuan -> China Button Museum -> Songzilaifeng Bridge -> Misty Rain Corridor

The Huguo Suiliangwang Temple, also known as the "Qi Laoye" Temple, is a local temple built to commemorate an honest official during the Ming Dynasty.

According to legend, during the Chongzhen period of the Ming Dynasty, there was a drought in Jiashan and people were starving everywhere. At that time, there was a master named Jin, who was the seventh child in the family and was known as Jin Qi. He was a minor official in the court who was in charge of transporting imperial grain. He could not bear to see the people starving, so he took out the imperial grain for disaster relief. However, he knew that releasing the imperial grain privately was a crime against the law, so he jumped into the river in Yanta Bay and committed suicide. In order to commemorate this good official, local people raised funds to build the "Seven Masters Temple" to worship the Seven Masters and Seven Ladies. After the Seventh Master committed suicide by jumping into the river, the imperial court investigated the truth and posthumously conferred him the title of "Marquis of Liji" and later the title of "King of Protecting the Country and Sufficient Grain". The Temple of the Seventh Master was also renamed "Temple of the King of Protecting the Country and Sufficient Grain".

The main gate of the Qilaoye Temple is on the street. The front hall is newly built, and the back hall is basically renovated to retain its old appearance. Its architecture is very special. There is a corridor eaves in front of the hall, and the beams and rafters are very exquisite and arched. On the threshold of the hall is a row of long wooden floor-to-ceiling windows, which is a common decoration in temples.

Every year on the third day of the fourth lunar month, which is the birthday of the seventh master, a temple fair is held here, which is very lively.

The Huguo Suiliangwang Temple is commonly known as the "Seven Lords Temple". In the Xitang Huguo Suiliangwang Temple in Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province, the "Jin Gong" enshrined is the local protector of Xitang. It is said that there was such a person in history, his surname was Jin and he was the seventh child. He once protected local people from imprisonment, and the people called him the Seventh Master. The specific story seems to be like this😄 - It is said that during the Chongzhen period of the Ming Dynasty, there was a famine in the Xitang area. At that time, the Seventh Master was supervising a grain ship passing by. Seeing so many starving people, he gave the emperor's grain to the starving people. Knowing that he could not escape the law, he committed suicide in the Yanta Bay River. The people who were rescued raised funds to build a temple for him. The local people have kept the Seventh Lord in mind. He did a good thing for the people, and the local people have commemorated him for hundreds of years... Every year on the third day of the fourth lunar month, the Seventh Lord holds a temple fair, which is very lively and full of local flavor. During the temple fair, there are folk art activities such as circus, white boat riding, and lake boat riding. This day is also the opening day of Xitang’s annual Tourism Festival.

Zuiyuan Gallery was first built in the Ming Dynasty. It originally had five courtyards and was a side hall of the house on Tawan Street of the Wang family, a prominent family in Xitang. Now there are four courtyards left, with ancient brick flower beds and a micro-brick arch bridge that is rare in Jiangnan. The ancient brick flower bed in the courtyard was originally built together with the house and has a history of more than 300 years. The "Zuiyuan Goose Bridge" in the southern courtyard is only wide enough for one person to pass through and is a famous brick arch bridge in Jiangnan.

The narrowest garden in Xitang - Zuiyuan. Zuiyuan, located on Tawan Street in Xitang, was originally a side hall of the residence of Wang's family, a prominent family in Xitang. It originally had five courtyards, but after renovation in 2000, it now has four courtyards and is open to the public. In my opinion, this is the narrowest garden in Xitang, and the Zuiyan Bridge in the garden is a pocket-sized brick arch bridge that can only accommodate one person. Although the garden is long and narrow, it has all the necessary courtyards and pavilions. It can be said that it is small but complete. The current owner and his son are both printmakers and engravers. They have set up the "Wang's Father and Son Printmaking Museum" with Xitang style in the park, where works can be viewed and sold at very affordable prices.

Shipi Lane is located on Xiaxi Street in Xitang Town. It is a narrow lane between Wang family's "Zhongfu Hall" and "Zunwen Hall". According to research, under the stone pavement in Shipin Lane is a sewer that prevents water from accumulating in the lane on rainy days. The sewer is named Shipin Lane because of the stone slabs as thin as skin that serve as its surface. Looking up at the sky in Shipin Lane, the broad blue sky becomes a long and narrow strip, so this place is also called the "Line of Sky" of Xitang.

Shipi Lane is one of the most distinctive attractions in Xitang Ancient Town. Shipi Lane is located on Xiaxi Street in Xitang Ancient Town. It is an open-air alley sandwiched between two residences and was built in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. It is named "Shipi Lane" because of its deep and narrow lane and the stone slabs are as thin as skin. It is also known as the "One Line of Sky" of Xitang. The Shipi Lane is 68 meters long and is paved with 216 stone slabs only 3 centimeters thick, while the ground is paved with 168 stone slabs. The widest part of the alley is 1.1 meters, and the narrowest part is only 0.8 meters. The height of the gables on both sides ranges from 6 meters to 10 meters. There is a long and narrow strip of sky above Shipinong. When you walk in it, you can only see a thin ray of light, so it is called "Xitang Skyline". Shipi Lane is the corridor between the two residences of Wang family, "Zunwen Hall" and "Zhongfu Hall", and is the passageway to the residences of Wang family, a prominent family in Xitang. The narrow space and unique light and shadow effects of Shipi Lane make it a great place for taking photos, and it is suitable for checking in wearing Hanfu or ancient costumes. As one of the iconic attractions of Xitang Ancient Town, Shipi Lane attracts many tourists with its unique architectural style and profound cultural heritage.

Zhongfu Hall is located on the east side of Shipin Lane in the ancient town. It was built during the Shunzhi and Kangxi periods of the Qing Dynasty and was the private residence of the Wang family in the Qing Dynasty. The Wang family originated from Wang Yuan, the commander-in-chief of the Imperial Camp of the Song Dynasty. According to legend, after Wang Yuan escorted Song Gaozong Zhao Gou to the south, he encountered the Ming Rebellion. His descendants hid in the Hangzhou, Jiaxing and Huzhou areas. During the Shunzhi and Kangxi periods of the Qing Dynasty, one of their descendants moved to Xitang and built this house.

Zhongfu Hall is a seven-courtyard complex with a long alley running through the front and back. It has a total of more than seventy halls and buildings and is a typical residential building from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The gate is no different from the houses next to it, but under this plain "disguise" lies a deep mansion. Some people say that this is the introverted cultural characteristic unique to the people of Jiangnan, while others say that this is a manifestation of the architectural style of "first suppressing and then exalting". Another theory is that robbers were common in the Taihu Lake area in the past, so the plain facade was a form of disguised "protection."

After pushing open the door and entering, the first entrance is the "front hall" with a small patio behind it; the second entrance is the "seating hall", which is where wealthy families park their sedan chairs. It is very spacious and has thick walls and doors to prevent robbers; the third entrance is the main hall "Zhongfu Hall". It is said that the plaque on the hall was written by Chen Bangyan, a Hanlin academician during the reign of Emperor Kangxi, to warn future generations "do more good deeds and accumulate virtue in daily life, so that your descendants will be blessed in the future." There is another special thing here: not only is the first floor paved with floor tiles, but the floors above are also paved with square bricks.

Wang's House in Xitang (Zhongfu Hall) is a typical Jiangnan mansion building in the Ming Dynasty. It is the residence of the Wang family, a prominent family in Xitang Town. According to the Wang family genealogy, the ancestor was Wang Yuan, the commander-in-chief of the Imperial Camp in the Song Dynasty. Wang Yuan followed Song Gaozong Zhao Gou to move south and moved to the battlefield to fight against the Jin army. Later, he was framed and killed, and his descendants lived here under an assumed name. Wang's House is a mansion built during the Qing Dynasty. It was once the largest house in Xitang, with seven courtyards and a back garden. Currently, four of the courtyards are open to the public, and the Xitang Celebrity Museum is housed inside.

Xiyuan is the largest private garden in Xitang Ancient Town. The current Xiyuan is a new park built in 1993. It is no longer the place where Nanshe recited poems. It was named "Xiyuan" in memory of Liu Yazi. The new West Garden has beautiful scenery, resembling the atmosphere of traditional Chinese gardens. The trees, flowers, plants, rockery pavilions and pools in the garden are very interesting. There are many exhibition halls in the park for tourists to visit. There is a "Tingtaoxuan" teahouse on the rockery on the east side. When you visit the park, you can sit for a while, taste tea, enjoy the scenery and enjoy yourself.

Among the many independent attractions in Xitang, this is the most beautiful one. Xiyuan is located on West Street, which is the richest and most prosperous place in the ancient town. It can be seen that the owner of this garden should be a person of some fame. The pavilions, towers, bridges and flowing water in the park have a restrained architectural style, and the common green plants are arranged compactly and neatly, which always looks just right in this small garden.

The site of the Button Museum was originally the residence of a wealthy family: the Xue Residence. This house was built in 1927, next to the street and the river, with a total depth of two floors. Compared with traditional buildings, Xue's house has a compact architecture, simple structure, and bright halls. It is a representative of the transformation process of traditional Jiangnan dwellings to modern architecture. The Button Museum has a total of six exhibition halls. Downstairs are the Ancient Button Exhibition Area, the Shell Button Production Process Exhibition Area, and the Chinese Knot Exhibition Area, which respectively display a series of hooks from ancient China, a generation of buttons from my country, and a variety of Chinese knots, reflecting the development process of Chinese buttons from nothing to something, from complex to simple, and from fine to coarse; upstairs are the Modern Button Exhibition Area, the Contemporary Button Exhibition Area, and the Button Application Area, which show the leapfrog development of buttons from the Song Dynasty to the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and display many rare shells in our daily life. The most worth mentioning is that the distinctive "Panhua Button" we see on cheongsam will also have staff here to demonstrate the production process on the spot to satisfy visitors' curiosity.

Xitang is a nationally famous button town. Its subordinate Dashun Village produces tens of billions of buttons annually, accounting for nearly half of the national total. The China Button Museum came into being in Xitang Ancient Town. Its specific address is in Xue’s house in the middle section of West Street in the ancient town. The Button Museum has a total of six exhibition halls: an ancient button display area, a modern button display area, a contemporary button display area, a shell button production process display area, a button application area, and a Chinese knot display area. The ancient button display area displays a large number of belt hooks made of metal or jade carvings in ancient my country. Many of them are extremely rare treasures from the Warring States Period before the Qin and Han Dynasties.

Songzilaifeng Bridge is located on the east side of Xiaotong Street in Xitang Ancient Town. It is a three-hole stone slab bridge connecting the Misty Corridor. It is a bridge that tourists who come to Xitang must pass by. The bridge was first built in 1637 (the tenth year of Chongzhen in the Ming Dynasty), renovated twice in the Qing Dynasty, and rebuilt again in 1997. There is a flower wall in the middle of the bridge, dividing it into two sides, and pedestrians can walk on each side. There is a canopy on the top of the bridge, with red tiles and black tiles, guardrails on both sides, and long stone seats for people to rest.

The Misty Corridor is also called the Rain Corridor. It can be found in many ancient towns in the south of the Yangtze River. From the outside, it looks like a street supported by wooden pillars and with a tiled roof. The rain corridor in Xitang is very unique because as long as you walk along the river in the ancient town, there will always be a corridor above your head to shelter you from the wind and rain. Especially on rainy days, walking under the corridor, listening to the sound of rain and appreciating the misty scenery outside the corridor, there is a strong artistic conception. Therefore, the rain corridor in Xitang has the beautiful name of "Misty Rain Corridor". The total length of the rain corridors in Xitang is nearly one kilometer, and most of them are built along the river. Walking in the corridors, you can visit various shops along the street, and sometimes rowboats carrying tourists pass by slowly.
