Torigoe Festival | Tokyo
Celebration
The Torigoe Festival, held annually in June at the Torigoe Shrine, a shrine with approximately 1400 years of history facing Kuramaebashi-dori, takes place on the Sunday of the festival. Starting at 6:30 AM, Tokyo's largest mobile shrine—weighing approximately 4 tons and 1000 kan—is passed between various community associations, parading through neighborhoods where worshippers live, attracting large crowds. Leading the shrine procession are Sarutahiko (tengu), a tebuki dance troupe, and children waving colorful flags. After sunset, the festival begins with the "Torigoe Night Festival," when paper lanterns at the shrine and tall lanterns from various town associations are lit, creating a solemn yet dreamlike atmosphere. At 9 PM, the shrine procession slowly enters the temple, bringing the festival to its climax.
