The style evolved in the 19th century with industrialisation, which increased the availability of fabrics and ready-to-wear garments. In 1951, under the shadow of the Cold War, the Dutch government introduced a system requiring museums to classify their collections for wartime evacuation. "Evacuation markings" determined which works should be prioritized for preservation: red for "very important," white for "important," and blue for "less important." This exhibition at IMC Gallery focuses on those forgotten blue markings. What does it mean—and ourselves—when a work of art has been labeled "less important"?
