This exhibition will explore the theme of diversity by comparing mythical creatures from different cultures. While these fantastical animals may look different, they serve a similar purpose – to help humans make sense of the world. On view in Gallery 339 will be classic Chinese legendary mythical creatures—the dragon, phoenix and qilin—juxtaposed with collection highlights from Japan, Korea, South and Southeast Asia, as well as Persia and Western Europe, to show the diversity of mythical creatures throughout the world, as well as their similarities and differences. Elaborately embroidered costumes and silver headdresses created by Miao, Yi and other minority peoples decorated with dragons, phoenixes, and creatures relating to origin myths will be on display in Gallery 326. In a third space (Gallery 321) Chinese contemporary works of mythical creatures by artists Xu Bing and Ai Weiwei show how the past continues to inform art today.

With an approach to functional design that prioritizes ease of use, aesthetic simplicity, and close attention to the ways that mundane objects and environments record our everyday habits, Tokyo-based product designer Naoto Fukasawa has been a hugely influential force in design for more than two decades. Best-known for his prior work as design director of MUJI—the Japanese “anti-brand” consumer goods company—Fukasawa has designed across a broad range of categories and media. Whether shaping electronics for a global market or collaborating with artisanal firms on fine furniture, Fukasawa advocates for a design philosophy of longevity, accessibility, and subtle humor over novelty, ephemerality, or blatant commercialism.

This exhibition, the largest of Christina Ramberg’s work to date, will illuminate the artist’s encyclopedia of imagery exploring experiences of gender, sexuality, and normative ideals of female beauty. Born in 1946, Ramberg has tended to be associated with the Chicago Imagists, a loose fellowship of artists in the mid-1960s who made vibrant work inspired by popular culture, from comic books to low-budget films and store-front displays. However, her exquisitely detailed, kinky aesthetic has always set her apart. Ramberg consistently worked in pursuit of a “coherent visual statement”, honing in on feminized aspects of the body and its erotic trappings: hairstyles, hands, corsets, shoes.

Love in the Time of Migration by Chelsea Abbas and Erin Semine Kökdil (USA/Guatemala, 2024, 21 minutes, Spanish with English subtitles) Love in the Time of Migration is a documentary short that follows the love story of Ronny and Suly, a Guatemalan couple from a rural town deeply impacted by migration. They quickly fell in love despite Ronny being in the US and Suly in Guatemala. Set amidst the backdrop of the U.S. immigration system, this film asks the question: can love conquer all? Preceded by Since You Arrived, My Heart Stopped Belonging to Me by Erin Semine Kökdil (USA, 2021, 21 minutes, Spanish with English subtitles) Since You Arrived, My Heart Stopped Belonging to Me follows the journey of a group of Central American mothers traveling through Mexico in search of their children who disappeared while migrating to the United States. Chelsea Abbas is a filmmaker and Associate Professor of Anthropology at Widener University. Her work focuses on border studies, migration, immigrant rights, indigeneity and Latino representation in mainstream media. She is a Film Scholar with Scribe. Erin Semine Kökdil is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, educator, and National Geographic explorer interested in building solidarity and inciting social change through film. Her work explores love and resistance, touching upon themes of migration, identity, and motherhood. She is an Assistant Professor of Creative Media Production at the University of Oklahoma. Suminagashi is a paper marbling technique originating in Japan. In this beginner friendly course, come learn how to create your own colorful creations. Marbled paper is beautiful as a standalone piece or as a background for further work, and suminagashi is one of the most accessible forms of marbling available to artists as it requires no special bath, just plain old water, ink, and dish soap! With this workshop, you will get to learn the basics of suminagashi and get to experiment with color, complexity, and have plenty of sheets to take home and use as you wish, be it for printmaking, books, or framing all on its own. A materials fee covers sumi ink, paper, tools, and studio maintenance. Please note: Masking is now encouraged, but optional in the studio space.
