In autumn 2025, a new group exhibition initiated by Baltic will explore marine ecosystems, the deep sea, coral reefs, ocean currents, intertidal and hypoxic zones, and how human activities affect marine life. Inspired in part by Baltic’s close proximity to the sea, situated on a tidal river eight miles from the mouth of the Tyne, and by the writings of marine biologist Rachel Carson, the exhibition will reflect on life below water and consider our relationship with the community of organisms and aquatic life that inhabit ocean environments.

Saodat Ismailova is a filmmaker and artist who came of age in the post-Soviet era Uzbekistan. Working between Paris and Tashkent she interweaves rituals, myths and dreams within the tapestry of everyday life. Her films investigate the historically complex and layered culture of Central Asia. Frequently based around oral stories in which women are the lead protagonists, and exploring systems of knowledge suppressed by globalised modernity, these consciousness expanding works hover between visible and invisible worlds.

Anna Lapwood is a renowned British organist, conductor, and music educator. She currently serves as the Director of Music at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge, and is the organist at the Royal Albert Hall. Known for her emotionally expressive and grandly structured performances, she specializes in interpreting Bach's works. She holds dual roles as Director of Music at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge, and organist at the Royal Albert Hall.

We're pleased to present The Waiting Gardens of the North by renowned Iraqi-American artist Michael Rakowitz. Commissioned by Baltic in partnership with the IWM 14-18 NOW Legacy Fund , this major project responds to conflict by, figuratively and literally, nurturing a community and an evolving indoor garden landscape. The garden will be inhabited by Rakowitz’s cardboard sculptures that attempt to reappear the archaeological cultural heritage that has been looted or destroyed in Iraq and Syria since the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. From the ‘seeds’ of this hanging garden we’ll host events, workshops, grow plants and create tinctures, recipes, and poultices both onsite and offsite that promote healing and recovery for the mind and body. The garden, at the end of the exhibition, will sprawl into the city in small parts to a network of community and school gardens, expanding its footprint beyond Baltic. IWM 14-18 NOW Legacy Fund: The IWM 14-18 NOW Legacy Fund is a national programme of 22 artist commissions inspired by the heritage of conflict and created in partnership with Imperial War Museums (IWM) and 14-18 NOW, the official UK arts programme for the First World War centenary. To mark the end of the First World War centenary, Imperial War Museums and 14-18 NOW worked together to co-commission the critically acclaimed film They Shall Not Grow Old by Academy Award winner Peter Jackson, which was seen by nearly 5 million people globally. Following the unprecedented success of the film, 14-18 NOW and IWM agreed that a share of the film’s royalties would be used to support a new programme of artist commissions, the IWM 14-18 NOW Legacy Fund. A total of £2.5 million is being made available to artists and cultural organisations across the UK. Led by Foundation Press, experts in risographs and art education for over 10 years, participants will learn how the risograph works and create their own bespoke seasonal greeting cards and envelopes. All materials, including collage and drawing tools, will be provided. Participants will leave the session with 15 copies of their card design, perfect for spreading holiday cheer to friends and family.
