Main Point Books invites you to a private lunch for fans of the greatest women writers of the Golden Age of mysteries. Best-selling author Marie Benedict's The Queens of Crime brings to life the lengths to which five talented women writers will go to be taken seriously in the male-dominated world of letters as they unpuzzle a mystery torn from the pages of their own novels. This is Marie Benedict's first event on the novel's launch day! The ticketed event, includes the book and lunch at the Radnor Valley Country Club. Tickets are $75. About the Book London, 1930. The five greatest women crime writers have banded together to form a secret society with a single goal: to show they are no longer willing to be treated as second class citizens by their male counterparts in the legendary Detection Club. Led by the formidable Dorothy L. Sayers, the group includes Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh, Margery Allingham and Baroness Emma Orczy. They call themselves the Queens of Crime. Their plan? Solve an actual murder, that of a young woman found strangled in a park in France who may have connections leading to the highest levels of the British establishment. May Daniels, a young English nurse on an excursion to France with her friend, seemed to vanish into thin air as they prepared to board a ferry home. Months later, her body is found in the nearby woods. The murder has all the hallmarks of a locked room mystery for which these authors are famous: how did her killer manage to sneak her body out of a crowded train station without anyone noticing? If, as the police believe, the cause of death is manual strangulation, why is there is an extraordinary amount of blood at the crime scene? What is the meaning of a heartbreaking secret letter seeming to implicate an unnamed paramour? Determined to solve the highly publicized murder, the Queens of Crime embark on their own investigation, discovering they’re stronger together. But soon the killer targets Dorothy Sayers herself, threatening to expose a dark secret in her past that she would do anything to keep hidden. Information Source: Main Point Books | eventbrite

Criminal Sentencing Colloquium: Developments in Civilian and Military Law Matthew J. Ryan Forum on Law and Public Policy April 25, 2025 Vasey Hall 206 9:45 – 3:00 p.m. This colloquium will examine crucial developments in sentencing law across two distinct domains: federal civilian sentencing jurisprudence and military justice reform. This event will bring together leading scholars and practitioners to explore these parallel yet distinct evolutionary paths in American sentencing law. It is a particularly opportune moment to explore these issues as it has been 20 years since the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision in United States v. Booker and just over one year since the military justice “sentencing parameters” became effective pursuant to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2022. In addition to our other distinguished panelists, we are honored to welcome Judge Stephanos Bibas of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit as our Keynote Speaker. Co-sponsored by: David F. and Constance B. Girard-diCarlo Center for Ethics, Integrity and Compliance, Federal Sentencing Reporter , National Institute of Military Justice This event is pending approval for 4 hours of substantive continuing legal education credit by the Pennsylvania Continuing Legal Education Board. This event will accommodate both in-person and virtual attendees. Registration is required, and space is limited. Information Source: Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law | eventbrite

Conferences
In this conference dedicated to renewing Catholic social teaching for a new age, Villanova University celebrates the election of its alumnus, Robert Cardinal Prevost, to the papacy. Soon after his election, Pope Leo XIV stated that he chose Leo as his regnal name because the body of Catholic social teaching begun by Pope Leo XIII (r. 1878-1903) would form “the path” from which he would address “new challenges for the defense of human dignity, justice, and labor.” Challenges of this kind, often captured under the term “the social question,” involve deep questions about the norms governing the societies and associations in which individuals make their lives in the modern world, marked as it is by very unequal distribution of material goods, property, and opportunity. Recognizing both that associations matter and that some associations do a far better job than others at contributing to human flourishing, Catholic social teaching passes nuanced judgments on socialism, capitalism, collectivism, individualism, and other theories that vie to shape culture, society, and law, and, through them all, the future of humanity. Working from the disciplinary perspectives of economics, labor theory, history, philosophy, and theology, the distinguished conference speakers will explore the new challenges facing Pope Leo XIV in light of the enduring principles of Catholic social teaching, attentive to Pope Benedict XVI’s warning that “there is no ordering of the State so just that it can eliminate the need for a service of love. Whoever wants to eliminate love is preparing to eliminate man as such” ( Deus Caritas Est No. 28b). You can find information about the full event at this link: https://www1.villanova.edu/university/law/about/news-events/events/2025/0827.html . This event is approved from the Continuing Legal Education Board for 6 substantive and 1 ethics credit. Information Source: Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law | eventbrite
