‘Primary Reading Simplified’ - A Meaningful Approach to Post-Phonics Reading Lessons Christopher Such is the author of The Art & Science of Primary Reading and his most recent book, Primary Reading Simplified. Christopher is an experienced teacher, school leader and reading consultant, who delivers professional development for schools, trusts and ITT providers on the subject of evidence-informed reading, mathematics teaching and curriculum development. Building on the influential work of Dylan Wiliam and Siobhan Leahy, this session led by Kate Jones will explore five core formative assessment strategies that are applicable across all subjects and key stages. Participants will examine how to embed these strategies into everyday classroom practice, with a clear focus on balancing research and evidence with practical implementation. The session will provide a wealth of actionable ideas, examples, and techniques to support both teachers and school leaders. The key strategies covered include: ● Sharing clear learning intentions and success criteria ● Eliciting evidence of student learning ● Using effective questioning ● Providing feedback that moves learning forward ● Activating students as instructional resources and self-regulated learners Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of how formative assessment can enhance pupil progress and engagement, as well as practical tools to support consistent, high-impact practice across their schools. __________________________________________ Kate Jones is a teacher, leader, bestselling author, and international speaker. She is Senior Associate for Teaching and Learning at Evidence Based Education and the author of ten books, including the popular Retrieval Practice series. She is also the host of The Love To Teach Podcast and works with schools worldwide to promote evidence-informed, practical teaching strategies.
