No prior experience in music or improv is necessary. Under Sebastian Blue's guidance, you'll discover the secrets to creating innovative and spontaneous melodies, integrating them into scenes and narratives. From off-the-cuff lyric invention to expressing emotions through song, you'll experiment with different musical genres without the need for a script. This artist talk is a part of the Boom Oaxaca exhibition, and the Palo Alto Art Center is delighted to host Narsiso Martinez as a guest speaker. Martinez, originally from Mexico, migrated to the United States at the age of 20 and has since gained global recognition for his thought-provoking artwork. Drawing inspiration from his own experiences as a farm worker, Martinez creates captivating paintings and mixed-media installations that showcase portraits of farm laborers. His unique artistic approach involves using found grocery store produce boxes as a backdrop for his creations. Martinez's talent and dedication to his craft are evident in his educational achievements as well. He completed high school at 29 years old and went on to earn an Associate of Arts degree from Los Angeles City College in 2009. In 2012, he obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts from California State University Long Beach, and in 2018, he received a Master of Fine Arts degree in drawing and painting from the same institution. Martinez's artwork has been displayed in numerous local and international exhibitions, including solo shows at prestigious venues such as the Long Beach Museum of Art and the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach. His work has also become a part of the permanent collections at notable institutions like the Crocker Art Museum, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum, and the Santa Barbara Museum. Currently residing in Long Beach, California, Martinez is represented by the acclaimed Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles. Get ready to laugh out loud with the highly popular stand-up comedian Zhao Yang as he returns to the stage on February 17th in Silicon Valley! Zhao Yang is one of the longest-performing comedians since the establishment of the Silicon Valley Stand-up Comedy in 2019. If you have been following us, you must have heard of him. Zhao Yang has been actively participating in the weekly open mic nights and major comedy shows in Silicon Valley. He has cracked jokes about various aspects of life in Silicon Valley, shared unique perspectives on life, and engaged in discussions on identity, gender, and freedom. From traditional Chinese comedy to stage plays to stand-up comedy, Zhao Yang has never stopped exploring the world of comedy. Now, in 2024, Zhao Yang is bringing his carefully crafted jokes to the audience with a solo comedy show called "You Are a Horse". Find out why he chose this name during his performance. The show will take place at the Palo Alto Art Center, located at 1313 Newell Rd, Palo Alto, CA 94306, on February 17th at 8:00 pm.
