Naoto Fukasawa: Things in Themselves | Philadelphia Museum of Art
Dec 13, 2024–Apr 20, 2025 (UTC-5)
Philadelphia
With an approach to functional design that prioritizes ease of use, aesthetic simplicity, and close attention to the ways that mundane objects and environments record our everyday habits, Tokyo-based product designer Naoto Fukasawa has been a hugely influential force in design for more than two decades. Best-known for his prior work as design director of MUJI—the Japanese “anti-brand” consumer goods company—Fukasawa has designed across a broad range of categories and media. Whether shaping electronics for a global market or collaborating with artisanal firms on fine furniture, Fukasawa advocates for a design philosophy of longevity, accessibility, and subtle humor over novelty, ephemerality, or blatant commercialism.
Christina Ramberg: A Retrospective | Philadelphia Museum of Art
Feb 8–Jun 1, 2025 (UTC-5)
Philadelphia
This exhibition, the largest of Christina Ramberg’s work to date, will illuminate the artist’s encyclopedia of imagery exploring experiences of gender, sexuality, and normative ideals of female beauty.
Born in 1946, Ramberg has tended to be associated with the Chicago Imagists, a loose fellowship of artists in the mid-1960s who made vibrant work inspired by popular culture, from comic books to low-budget films and store-front displays. However, her exquisitely detailed, kinky aesthetic has always set her apart. Ramberg consistently worked in pursuit of a “coherent visual statement”, honing in on feminized aspects of the body and its erotic trappings: hairstyles, hands, corsets, shoes.
Staged: Studio Photographs from the Collection | Philadelphia Museum of Art
Mar 1–Jun 29, 2025 (UTC-5)
Philadelphia
Photography is often thought of as a means to capture the fleeting occurrences and unpredictable juxtapositions of the visual world. But what happens when photographers choose to work within a single enclosed space, exercising near-complete control over everything that happens in front of their lens? Although this premise may sound limiting, artists have long used the blank slate of the studio to create an endless variety of moving, dynamic, and daring images.

CDCS Colloquium: Professor Devon Powers | McNeil Building, Room 367
Mar 31, 2025 (UTC-5)
Philadelphia
What is a trend? Answering that question isn’t as straightforward as it might seem at first. A trend can be a social media phenomenon or a predilection toward a particular aesthetic. A trend can be a broad-based sociocultural dynamic or something one observes or finds in data. That trend has such a wide variety of meanings and applications is suggestive, I argue, of the concept’s importance—its emergence as a key feature of the contemporary media, cultural, and information environment. “Trend” illustrates something essential about change, and perhaps about our era. This talk will explore that “something” by proposing a definition and theory of trends. Rather than just a synonym for shift or change, I will argue that “trend” increasingly names both a media form and a type of media content. I will also explore how “trend” allows us to comprehend important lessons about media industries, media history, and our media environment. The talk will draw from my current book project, How Trends Work. About Speaker Devon Powers is Professor of Communication and Media at the University of Michigan. Her research explores historical and contemporary consumer culture and the dynamics of cultural intermediation, circulation, and promotion. She is the author of On Trend: The Business of Forecasting the Future (University of Illinois Press, 2019), Writing the Record: The Village Voice and the Birth of Rock Criticism (University of Massachusetts Press, 2013), and co-editor of Blowing Up the Brand: Critical Perspectives on Promotional Culture (Peter Lang, 2010). Her academic work has appeared in Communication Theory, New Media & Society, Journal of Consumer Culture, and Creative Industries Journal, among others; she has also written for Wired, Atlantic Monthly, the Washington Post, and other popular venues.

About A Hole in the StoryAt his desk one day, prominent Washington commentator Adam Zweig receives a text message. “Btw want to give you a heads-up abt some breaking news,” it reads. “Call soonest.” These are the early rumblings of an eventual media storm generated by small-town reporter Valerie Iovine, who has gone public with her account of sexual harassment at the hands of esteemed editor and liberal icon Max Lieberthol. Twenty years have passed since the incident, and though Adam wasn’t directly involved, he quickly finds himself implicated and entangled, his career under imminent threat. Adam has never forgotten his history with Valerie: as former colleagues, their workplace collaboration had gradually tipped into a mutual romantic attraction. Or so he believed. Confronted by the claims against his former boss and a growing awareness of rampant sexism in his industry, Adam, who had always thought of himself as progressive, is forced to challenge his own assumptions over the years. What once seemed incidental becomes sinister; what once seemed like a blundering encounter helped derail a young woman’s promising career. Sly and ironic, A Hole in the Story explores one imperfect man’s dilemmas as he tries to keep his feet in a shifting moral landscape.
