Table Manners | San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Sep 14, 2024–Aug 2, 2026 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
Exhibitions
Table Manners brings together tableware, flatware, and drinkware from the SFMOMA Architecture + Design collection spanning nearly 100 years. The exhibition celebrates the ways design has shaped our relationship to food, our bodies, and communities, and how dining can be a profound communal and cultural experience. From self-filling wine glasses and teapots made of tea, to crisp modernist spoons and flatware made from discarded CDs, Table Manners explores the performance of dining. The exhibition includes works by Virgil Abloh, Joe Colombo, Zaha Hadid, Roberto Lugo, and many more, accompanied by illustrations and textiles by Lucy Stark.

Los Angeles
Exhibitions
Experience Steven Spielberg’s Jaws (1975) like never before. Jaws: The Exhibition is the first-ever exhibition of this scale at the Academy Museum, focused exclusively on a single film, and the largest mounted exhibition ever for Jaws, the Oscar®-winning film from Universal Pictures. It celebrates the film’s 50th anniversary and revisits Jaws scene by scene, through original objects, behind-the-scenes revelations, and interactive moments. Curated with direct access to the collections from Steven Spielberg and The Amblin Hearth Archive, NBCUniversal Archives & Collections, and more, the exhibition dives deep into the film’s production history and explores its enduring impact. Directed by Oscar-winner Steven Spielberg, Jaws became the first summer blockbuster that forever changed the movie industry. The suspenseful adventure film, adapted from the novel by Peter Benchley, is centered on three main characters—Brody, Hooper, and Quint—who hunt a great white shark menacing the seaside town of Amity Island. The monumental success of Jaws belies uncertain beginnings, where production challenges arising from an unprecedented mechanical shark spurred creative problem-solving. Over five decades later, it remains clear that the tenacity of its cast and crew led to the realization of this beloved classic, one of the most influential films in motion picture history.

Zheng Chongbin: Golden State | Los Angeles County Museum of Art

Mar 23, 2025–Jan 4, 2026 (UTC-8)
Los Angeles
Exhibitions
Over the past four decades, Shanghai-born, Marin County–based artist Zheng Chongbin (b. 1961) has cultivated a unique practice that engages with the driving concepts and aesthetics of the Light and Space movement and East Asia’s tradition of ink painting. Educated in both traditional Chinese figurative painting and installation and performance art, Zheng synthesizes these seemingly disparate practices into unprecedented signature painting and video techniques. Zheng Chongbin: Golden State is a focused presentation that features two video installation pieces coupled with painted and printed works. Through abstract forms and distorted views of California’s natural landscape, Zheng explores water, light, and movement in his signature works.

MOCA Focus: Takako Yamaguchi | The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles

Jun 29, 2025–Jan 4, 2026 (UTC-8)
Los Angeles
Exhibitions
MOCA Focus: Takako Yamaguchi is the third exhibition in the recently relaunched MOCA Focus series, which presents an artist’s first solo museum show in Los Angeles and centers on new or discrete bodies of work. Born in Okayama, Japan, in 1952, Yamaguchi moved to the U.S. in the early 1970s and began to appropriate imagery from sources as diverse as Mexican muralism, Renaissance art, Japanese Nihonga, and Art Nouveau in ornate paintings that pose a challenge to rigid notions of ethnic identity and cultural ownership. At age seventy-two, the Los Angeles–based artist is synthesizing the motifs she has developed over the past forty years in a series of archly stylized oil-and-bronze-leaf seascapes featured in this exhibition. Yamaguchi’s precise yet luscious paintings incorporate her “Eastern” and “Western”-influenced vocabulary of abstract zigzags, spirals, and braids to denote natural forms like rain, waves, and mountains, representing a culmination of her decades-long provocations of style, taste, and identity.

Guadalupe Maravilla: Les soñadores | REDCAT ROY AND EDNA DISNEY/CALARTS THEATER

Sep 13–Dec 19, 2025 (UTC-8)
Los Angeles
Exhibitions
For his first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, Guadalupe Maravilla transforms REDCAT into an environment for healing and storytelling. Born in El Salvador, Maravilla fled the country at the age of eight as an unaccompanied minor to escape the violence of the twelve-year Salvadoran Civil War, reuniting with his family in the United States. As an adult, the artist survived cancer, a disease he believes resulted from the childhood traumas of war, migration, exile, and living in the US undocumented. Throughout this new exhibition, Maravilla retraces his personal journey as a migrant while connecting it with the journeys of others, offering a site for ancestral healing and collective care.

Simpson and Eamon Ore Girón that blend technology with Indigenous iconography and craft; and works by Leslie Martinez and Abraham Cruzvillegas that upcycle everyday materials to document consumption and to suggest possibilities for renewal.
