Meet artist Stephen Hendee In 2023 The Mill commissioned Baltimore based artist Stephen Hendee to create Buisine, a site specific sculptural light installation for our Listening Gallery. Working within the constraints of ongoing construction, Hendee created this magnificent 24’ organic & dramatic horizontal band of illuminated polypropylene, bringing new light into our former dark and dusty grain mill. Join us for a conversation as Stephen Hendee returns to the site for the first time to celebrate the work. Information Source: The Mill | eventbrite

Screenings of “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” and Jacob's Ladder with authors Mark Dawidziak and Arlen Schumer. Author Mark Dawidziak speaks with Arlen Schumer about his book, Everything I Needed to Know I Learned in The Twilight Zone. Following, join us for a blockbuster Saturday night at the movies–starting with the seminal, Oscar-winning TZ episode, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” and capped off by a screening of 1990’s Jacob’s Ladder, a cult classic film directly inspired by “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.” An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge (Season 5, Episode 22) Tonight, a presentation so special and unique that for the first time in the five years we've been presenting The Twilight Zone, we're offering a film shot in France by others. Winner of the Cannes Film Festival of 1962, as well as other international awards, here is a haunting study of the incredible from the past master of the incredible, Ambrose Bierce. Here is the French production of An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge. Jacob's Ladder (1990) Jacob's Ladder stars Tim Robbins as Jacob Singer, an American postman whose experiences before and during his military service in Vietnam result in strange, fragmentary visions and bizarre hallucinations that continue to haunt him. As his ordeal worsens, Jacob desperately attempts to figure out the truth. *** Mark Dawidziak is the author or editor of 25 books, including three acclaimed studies of landmark television series: The Columbo Phile, The Night Stalker Companion and Everything I Need to Know I Learned in The Twilight Zone. He also is an internationally recognized Mark Twain scholar, and five of his books are about the iconic American writer. His most recent book, A Mystery of Mysteries: The Death and Life of Edgar Allan Poe, was published by St. Martin’s Press in February 2023. As Roy Lichtenstein brought comic book art into the fine art world, Arlen Schumer has brought it into the commercial art world via his unique comic book-style art, for advertising, editorial and promotional usage. Arlen’s background in graphic design (RISD), art direction and copywriting in New York City advertising agencies, combined with his expertise and enthusiasm for the comic book medium and its rich history, produces captivating award-winning imagery recognized worldwide. He has been a long-standing member of the Society of Illustrators. As a published author and pop culture historian, Arlen has been equally recognized; his book The Silver Age of Comic Book Art, won the Independent Book Publishers Award for Best Popular Culture Book, ABC’s 20/20named him “one of the country's preeminent authorities on comics and culture,” the BBC said his works on The Twilight Zonewere “a cut above the rest, full of passion and erudition”. Comic Book Artist magazine called him “one of the more articulate and enthusiastic advocates of comic book art in America.” His other books areVisions from The Twilight Zone and The Neal Adams Sketchbook. We close out our Twilight Zone Symposium with screenings of two classic episodes and the film, The Stepford Wives. We close out the symposium in style with a pop-up art show of Staples High School students’ artworks inspired by one of the most memorable Twilight Zone episodes, “Eye of the Beholder.” After a screening of that fan-favorite episode, we have a real treat in store for you–a screening of the episode, “Number 12 Looks Just Like You”--complete with original commercials from its airdate in 1964! Finally, we cap the weekend off with a screening of a cult-classic 1975 film with thematic ties to “Number 12,” The Stepford Wives (starring the enigmatic Katherine Ross), also partially filmed right here in Westport! Eye of the Beholder (Season 2, Episode 6. Originally aired November 11, 1960) Suspended in time and space for a moment, your introduction to Miss Janet Tyler, who lives in a very private world of darkness. A universe whose dimensions are the size, thickness, length of the swath of bandages that cover her face. In a moment we will go back into this room, and also in a moment we will look under those bandages. Keeping in mind of course that we are not to be surprised by what we see, because this isn't just a hospital, and this patient 307 is not just a woman. This happens to be the Twilight Zone, and Miss Janet Tyler, with you, is about to enter it. Number 12 Looks Just Like You (Season 5, Episode 17. Originally aired January 24, 1964) Given the chance, what young girl wouldn't happily exchange a plain face for a lovely one? What girl could refuse the opportunity to be beautiful? For want of a better estimate, let's call it the year 2000. At any rate, imagine a time in the future where science has developed the means of giving everyone the face and body he dreams of. It may not happen tomorrow, but it happens now, in The Twilight Zone. The Stepford Wives (1975) The Stepford Wives was written by William Goldman, who based his screenplay on Ira Levin's 1972 novel of the same name. The film stars Katharine Ross as a woman who relocates with her husband (Peter Masterson) and children from New York City to the Connecticut community of Stepford, where she comes to find that the women live lives of unwavering subservience to their husbands. Filmed in Connecticut in 1974, The Stepford Wives premiered theatrically in February 1975 *** As Roy Lichtenstein brought comic book art into the fine art world, Arlen Schumer has brought it into the commercial art world via his unique comic book-style art, for advertising, editorial and promotional usage. Arlen’s background in graphic design (RISD), art direction and copywriting in New York City advertising agencies, combined with his expertise and enthusiasm for the comic book medium and its rich history, produces captivating award-winning imagery recognized worldwide. Sponsored by the Y’s Men of Westport/Weston The television’s on, it’s late night, and there’s music. Johnny Carson and Doc Severinsen’s era is over. David Letterman is the new, fresh face at NBC, and inside 30 Rock, Paul Shaffer is conjuring an enduring late-night template in song. Straight out of years on the bandstand at Saturday Night Live in that very same building, and together with Steve Jordan, Will Lee, and the late Hiram Bullock, beginning in 1982 Shaffer will join his 1950s/1960s transistor radio memories with ours, celebrating the fabulous moments and fabulous tunes that reminded us on Letterman — every night — that the River of Popular Song is deep and wide ... lifting, connecting, delighting, and inspiring us. Shaffer’s place in pop culture as a music historian par excellence made him the natural choice to helm the house band for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductions beginning in 1986, and The Maestro has continued — to this day — that ongoing love affair with the chords, the backbeat, the melody, the HEART of what makes a great song, well, great! On April 6, as part of The Westport Library’s four-day celebration of music, media, and creativity, the 2025 VersoFest Oral History Project (recorded and archived for podcast) will join Shaffer with The Beehive Queen, Christine Ohlman — herself a veteran of that same SNL Band — to talk about the journey that brought him from a small town in Canada at the very northernmost tip of Highway 61 to sail that River of Song along with The World’s Most Dangerous Band, and his — and our — wonderful place in that musical history, then and now. P.S.: There’ll be a piano onstage, and there WILL be music! Join us at 11:00 for coffee and donuts provided by the Y's Men, and the program begins at 11:30 on stage! *** VersoFest is The Westport Library’s annual music and media conference and festival where knowledge is shared and inspiration is discovered — a forum for media creators, artists, and fans to converge. VersoFest includes conversations where experts share their perspective and vision. Intimate workshops provide creators the opportunity to deconstruct, improve, and hone their craft. Performances entertain and inspire. Click here to learn more about this year’s festival. *** With your registration/ticket purchase, the bearer is entitled to one Complimentary Margarita, Paloma, or Aguafresca at Don Memo, Westport. Please show your registration upon arrival. Thank you. Information Source: The Westport Library* | eventbrite
