This exciting event is presented in partnership with Michigan Humanities and will feature Angeline Boulley, the talented author of the 2023-24 Great Michigan Read Selection, Firekeeper's Daughter. As an instant bestseller, Firekeeper's Daughter tells the captivating story of Daunis Fontaine, a biracial, unenrolled tribal member from Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Through Daunis' journey, Boulley brings attention to the challenges faced by Native American groups in Michigan and across the nation.
Throughout the evening, Boulley will discuss the themes and topics explored in her novel, shedding light on the struggles and triumphs of the Ojibwe community. As an enrolled member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and a former Director of the Office of Indian Education at the U.S. Department of Education, Boulley's storytelling is rooted in her personal experiences and deep connection to her heritage.
