May is Mental Health Awareness Month! And since last year's Freedom Rhymers Mental Health poetry event went so well, Left Turn Village is hosting another one Thursday, May 29th at 7:00 pm. Once again, it's going to be at Suite Metuchen located at 406 Main Street, Metuchen, NJ. Contestants will have five minutes to astound us with their original pieces surrounding any aspect of mental health. After contestants perform, audience members will have the opportunity to share on the open mic. Open mic pieces can be one to two minutes long, and do not have to be the performer's original work, though they should fall in line with the theme. [Note: Space is limited to five Freedom Rhymer Contestants and approximately 10 open mic performers. All Contestants must be in person. Contest and open mic ️are both on first-come basis. There is no prize for open mic performers.] Whether you're an experienced poet or a newcomer to the form, this event is a chance to connect with others, share your voice, and celebrate the power of poetry to inspire change. We hope to see you! Freedom Rhymer Rules: • There is room for 5 poets to grace the mic. • Contestants are on a first-come, first-serve basis. • Contestants must attend the event in-person. • Contestants must be at least 18 years old. • Each poet will have five minutes to perform as many pieces as they like (so long as it fits within the time allotted). • Freedom Rhymer contestants must perform their own original work. • Pieces must be themed around Mental Health • Audience members will vote for their favorites after all five contestants have performed. • Contestants will be judged on Content, Presence & Delivery, Dramatic Appropriateness and Overall Performance. • Votes will determine the first ($100), second ($50), and third ($25) place winners. She is passionate about empowering others through the transformational powers of the spoken and written word. She crafted her first poem at the tender age of ten, and has been living her life in verse ever since. She has performed for numerous organizations such as the NAACP, "The Lost Souls Project", and the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa Sorority, Inc. She has written poems to honor community leaders and projects of note. Her homage to Nikki Giovanni was published in the Moonstone Arts "Tribute to Nikki Giovanni" Anthology in 2023. Golden Sapphyre is also honored to be a part of the "When Women Speak" Collective. She is a mother of three and grandmother of one, a poet/performer, singer/songwriter, educator, and lifelong dreamer. Golden Sapphyre is a pROud member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. December is the author of "Schizophrenic Sapiosexual," a compelling exploration of complex themes of love that resonate with many readers. Her work reflects a deep engagement with personal experiences within the realms of love. Atlas’ commitment to creativity extends beyond the page; they have also participated in the 2022 television documentary "Voices In The Garden," showcasing her talents. In addition to writing, December enjoys performing poetry, sharing their art on stages across the state. Currently working on another book, December aims to inspire others to find their own voices through words, fostering a community where storytelling thrives as an essential form of self-expression. They have been called “James Joyce on acid.” They are writing a book on total system America, and are in process creating a cross platform memory/story telling/voice as resistance project, working title ‘homesick for a world that doesn’t exist.’ TJ (he/him) TJ is an award winning spoken word poet based out of Jersey City, NJ. TJ's mostly anecdotal of poetry allows him to beautifully express and cope with life's challenges, and to tell his story from his point of view. Even though he has only been writing poetry since 2022 he is no stranger to the poetry scene.
