Join us for a hands-on introduction to careers in public safety at the
DPSST Youth Academy,
taking place at
Oregon Public Safety Academy
on
June 30, 2025 at 8 a.m.
This event is open to high school students and recent graduates ages 14-18. It is a great opportunity for those interested in law enforcement and public safety to learn from professionals in the field. The half-day academy will include hands-on activities, a Q&A session with public safety professionals, academy campus tours, and valuable insights into the world of public safety. Don't miss out on this chance to explore your passion and kickstart your future career!
Participating students will participate in four 30-minute interactive activities, including:
Crime Scene Investigation:
In this session, attendees will explore the methods used to investigate and secure crime scenes. Participants will practice skills such as evidence collection, fingerprint dusting, and proper documentation techniques.
K9 Tracking:
This session introduces attendees to the work of police K9 units and the training that goes into preparing a dog for duty. Participants will assist in an area search scenario, using tracking techniques to locate a simulated missing person. The session also includes a discussion of how K9s support law enforcement in tracking, detection, and apprehension.
Mock Trial:
Attendees will take part in a simulated courtroom experience that highlights the legal responsibilities of law enforcement officers. They’ll learn how officers contribute to the judicial process through testimony and documentation. The session will also provide an overview of courtroom procedures, roles, and legal terminology.
Tactical Medicine and First Aid:
Students will receive hands-on training in lifesaving techniques used by law enforcement officers in the field. The session will focus on the application of tourniquets and other tactical first aid tools commonly carried by officers. Participants will also learn how law enforcement officers respond effectively in high-stress medical emergencies.
After students have rotated through all learning stations, students will be provided lunch during a Q&A session to hear about various career options in public safety. We will also be conducting optional campus tours of the Oregon Public Safety Academy, where all police officers in Oregon receive basic training.
