Kathakali Dance-Drama Plays - Lecture/Demonstration | East Quadrangle
Arts
Experience the captivating world of Kathakali dance-drama plays from Kerala, South-western India, at the upcoming lecture-demonstration. Renowned artist Kalamandalam Manoj Kumar, accompanied by lecturer V. Kaladharan, will present an enlightening showcase of this ancient art form. Delve into the profound language of Kathakali as Kumar unveils the mesmerizing hand-gestures, leg-exercises, body-movements, eye-exercises, and facial expressions that bring the characters to life. Without the use of facial make-up and costumes, the performers rely solely on their skill and the enchanting vocal and instrumental music. Throughout the demonstration, V. Kaladharan, a distinguished writer and art-critic, will provide insight into the history, aesthetics, and transformations of this art form.
The lecture-demonstration is part of the U-M Fall 2023 Festival of Asian Music and will be followed by a captivating performance at 7pm in the Keene Theater, where the actors will showcase their artistry with full make-up and costume. Kathakali, a dance-theatre tradition that originated in the 17th century, is a harmonious fusion of dance, drama, and music. The intricately designed facial makeup and costumes add to its enchantment. It takes hours of preparation for the performers to transform themselves into the characters they portray.
