Itoman Great Tug-of-War | Itoman
Celebration
The Itoman Tug of War is one of Okinawa's most exciting traditional events, held every summer in the coastal city of Itoman. Itoman, renowned for its rich maritime and fishing heritage, is a vibrant event, with locals and tourists gathering to witness and participate in this centuries-old ritual, a display of strength, unity, and community pride.
The event revolves around a giant rice straw rope, often weighing several tons. Two teams, east and west, represent different parts of the city. Competitors line up on either side of the rope, clinging to it with a firm grip. At the sound of a signal, a fierce struggle begins. This isn't just a contest of physical strength; it's a symbolic contest, meant to bring good luck, prosperity, and harmony to the coming year.
To further enhance the atmosphere, the event features a lively "Michi-naka Festival" (Eisa) parade, drum performances, and traditional dances, showcasing Okinawa's rich culture. Stalls serving local delicacies line the streets, creating a lively atmosphere for families and tourists alike.
