Unbraid: Hair, Clay, and Craft | Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Hair carries a wealth of meaning in our daily lives. It signifies identity and heritage, symbolizes health and age, and serves as a form of personal expression. In the exhibition “Untying the Braids: Hair, Clay, and Craft,” three contemporary artists discover hair as a rich medium for cross-media experimentation. Adebunmi Gbadebo embeds the hair of family and friends into vessels she creates using materials gathered from the lands where her ancestors were enslaved. Jennifer Ling Datchuk uses hair as a metaphor in her video and ceramic works to question gender stereotypes about women and girls, particularly East Asian women and girls. Sonya Clark, who has long incorporated hair into her diverse creative practice, depicts cornrows and braids—hairstyles closely linked to Black identity—in indigo-toned lithographs. All three artists use hair as a medium to unravel complex histories, weaving together family and cultural heritage. Their work prompts us to consider this seemingly ordinary yet powerful material, whose form and meaning profoundly shape us. As Clark says, "Hair is power…it's a fiber that can be used to tell a story." She tells us it's "the fiber that grows within us."

Framing Nature: Gardens and Imagination | Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

A piece of land, a tranquil retreat, a well-ordered landscape, a place requiring diligent cultivation: gardens can evoke a multitude of associations, especially in the realm of art. The exhibition "Framed Nature: Gardens and Imagination" brings together artworks from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston's global collection to explore the similarities and differences of gardens across different eras and regions. Visitors can appreciate beloved classics as well as masterpieces never before publicly exhibited. All works revolve around the theme of the garden, showcasing its essence as a fertile ground for human creativity and imagination. From monumental tapestries to intricately detailed Chinese scroll paintings, a variety of artworks create illusions of garden spaces. Modern and contemporary prints, drawings, photographs, and paintings immerse visitors in a rich tapestry of the artificial and the natural world. Visitors can reflect on how we connect with the outdoors, how we shape garden spaces through cultivation, care, and labor, and how we express this universal human emotion through art. The "Frame Nature" exhibition coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston's "Blooming Arts Festival"—a beloved annual spring tradition at the museum.

The Banner Project: Mark Thomas Gibson | Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Mark Thomas Gibson (born 1980) describes himself as an "American history painter," drawing inspiration from sources as diverse as comic books, Renaissance painting, and late 19th-century editorial cartoons. His "Banner Project" is the largest expansion yet of his "Town Crier" series, which draws on the pre-modern tradition of collective speaking, when town criers publicly announced laws and news.

Divine Color: Hindu Prints from Modern Bengal | Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Vivid prints of divinities are part of daily life for Hindus in India and around the world, used for worship in homes, factories, and offices, as well as for adornment on cars, calendars, computers, and shop counters. The art world has historically overlooked these images, often called “calendar art,” because they are inexpensive and mass produced. But they have a rich and fascinating history in and influence on Indian art, religion, and society.
