Join Peter Shear and John Yau for an enlightening discussion on the lives and artistic contributions of Matthew Wong and Milton Resnick. The Milton Resnick and Pat Passlof Foundation is proud to present an Artist Talk featuring Peter Shear in dialogue with esteemed poet and writer, John Yau. This engaging session will delve into the ongoing exhibition titled U+ME: Paintings and Poetry by Milton Resnick and Matthew Wong. The two experts will also explore the personal correspondence between Peter Shear and Matthew Wong, which took place between 2013 and 2017 via Facebook Messenger. Peter Shear, a self-taught painter born in Beverly Farms, Massachusetts in 1980, is recognized for his captivating canvases. His works beautifully combine abstraction and representation, often incorporating elements of both. With a unique absence of dogma, his deeply hued paintings exist in a realm between figures, landscapes, and architecture, or simply as spontaneous configurations of lines and colors. In an interview with Studio Critical, Shear discusses the genesis of his images, emphasizing the importance of leaving behind open-ended interpretations. Currently residing and working in Bloomington, Indiana, Shear has exhibited his work extensively across the United States and internationally. His solo shows have been featured at renowned galleries such as Cheim & Read in New York and KOKI Arts in Tokyo, among others. Shear has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, showcasing his talent and artistic vision. John Yau, a poet, curator, and critic, has been writing about art since the late 1970s. His profound understanding and analysis of artwork are evident in his recent monographs and writings on art, such as "Joe Brainard: The Art of the Personal" and "Please Wait by the Coatroom: Reconsidering Race and Identity in American Art." Yau has written extensively about Matthew Wong's work and contributed to publications like the catalog for the exhibition "U + ME: Paintings and Poetry by Milton Resnick and Matthew Wong." Additionally, Yau's writings can be found in the catalog for the upcoming exhibition "Matthew Wong | Vincent van Gogh: Painting as a Last Resort" at the van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Don't miss this exceptional Artist Talk with Peter Shear and John Yau at the Milton Resnick and Pat Passlof Foundation in New York City. It promises to be an engaging and thought-provoking event, shedding light on the artistic journeys of Matthew Wong and Milton Resnick. Admission is free, and the event will take place on January 25, 2024, at 87 Eldridge Street, New York, NY 10002.
