Join the Melbourne Art Library for an enlightening reading group led by artist Jenna Lee. The Artists' Syllabus is a unique opportunity to delve into the texts that have influenced Jenna Lee's artistic practice. By sharing selected passages from these influential texts, Jenna will offer valuable insights into the impact they have had on her discipline, creative process, and presentation of completed works. In this group discussion, participants will explore the themes of the texts and highlight the transformative moments that have shaped Jenna's artistic journey. The reading group will tackle two thought-provoking essays from the book "Becoming Our Future - Global Indigenous Curatorial Practice" by Freja Carmichael and Kimberley Moulton. This engaging event will take place at the Melbourne Art Library, located at the Testing Grounds Emporium on 438 Queen St, Melbourne. Jenna Lee is a talented artist of diverse heritage, incorporating her Gulumerridjin, Wardaman, and KarraJarri Saltwater roots, as well as her mixed Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, and Anglo-Australian ancestry into her work. Her artistic practice spans various mediums such as sculpture, installation, body adornment, moving images, photography, and projection. With a focus on materiality and ancestral culture, Jenna explores themes of archives, colonial collecting, and settler-colonial texts. By dissecting and reimagining source materials, language, and books, she creates visually stunning representations of cultural pride and identity. Drawing inspiration from her family's teachings and her own cultural experiences, Jenna's work is a testament to the importance of representation for mixed First Nations communities.
