Join Saint Joseph’s Arts Foundation's Curator-In-Residence Ashara Ekundayo, interdisciplinary artist Cheryl Derricotte, and Museum of the African Diaspora Chief of Curatorial Affiars & Public Programs Key Jo Lee for a captivating discussion on the impact of institutional and independent Black curatorial praxis. This intimate conversation will delve into topics such as the rise of insistent spaces for Black imagination, the role of memory in Diasporic artnarratives, and the significance of sanctuary, wilderness, and survival in Black communities. The discussion will be held in conjunction with the Fall exhibition titled "Tracking Im // landscapes on safety," which explores personal and visceral considerations of geographies that have historically provided refuge for Black people. Through a thought-provoking selection of artworks including photography, glass, printmaking, and built objects, the artists ignite conversations surrounding the tactics, strategies, games, and recipes employed to defy death. Featured artists include Diamela Cutiño, Cheryl Derricotte, Rodney Ewing, and Ramekon O'Arwisters. Cheryl Derricotte, known for her work in glass, paper, and thread, has received recognition from esteemed publications such as the New York Times and The Guardian. Key Jo Lee, chief of curatorial affairs and public programs at the Museum of the African Diaspora, brings her extensive expertise in African diaspora art to the discussion. Ashara Ekundayo, a Black feminist interdisciplinary curator, artist, and cultural theologian, will guide the conversation with her deep understanding of Black spaces and archives. Don't miss this enlightening dialogue on November 7, 2023, at Saint Joseph’s Arts Society in San Francisco. Admission is free, so make sure to reserve your spot for this transformative event.
