Join Ana Alenso, editor and artist, Lucía Pizzani, artist contributor to the book, and Raquel Villar-Pérez, curator at Impressions Gallery, for the highly anticipated book launch of "What The Mine Gives, The Mine Takes". This thought-provoking publication explores the hidden predatory logic within gold mining exploitation and the resulting socio-ecological devastation in the Guayana and Venezuela's Amazon regions. Through a diverse range of art projects, poems, essays, diagrams, satellite visions, and documentary images, this collective and sensitive cartography provides a unique insight into the mining conflict. Dive deep into the origins of the book, the work of Latin American artists, and their engagement with affected communities. Discover how Guayana and Venezuela's experiences inform global debates on extractivism and climate emergency. Berlin-based Venezuelan artist Ana Alenso's installations are poetic and dystopian, using sculptures, photographs, sound, and video to explore socio-ecological consequences stemming from extractivism. Lucía Pizzani, born in Caracas and based in London, brings a materiality-focused approach to her practice, informed by her involvement in the environmental movement in Venezuela. Raquel Villar-Pérez, an academic and curator, focuses on de- and anti-colonial discourses in contemporary art from the Global Majority, with a particular interest in women-identified image-makers. Don't miss this insightful conversation and exploration of art's role in addressing migration, feminisms, social and environmental justice. The book launch will take place at Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool on February 24, 2024. Admission is free.
