Framing Nature: Gardens and Imagination | Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

A piece of land, a tranquil retreat, a well-ordered landscape, a place requiring diligent cultivation: gardens can evoke a multitude of associations, especially in the realm of art. The exhibition "Framed Nature: Gardens and Imagination" brings together artworks from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston's global collection to explore the similarities and differences of gardens across different eras and regions. Visitors can appreciate beloved classics as well as masterpieces never before publicly exhibited. All works revolve around the theme of the garden, showcasing its essence as a fertile ground for human creativity and imagination. From monumental tapestries to intricately detailed Chinese scroll paintings, a variety of artworks create illusions of garden spaces. Modern and contemporary prints, drawings, photographs, and paintings immerse visitors in a rich tapestry of the artificial and the natural world. Visitors can reflect on how we connect with the outdoors, how we shape garden spaces through cultivation, care, and labor, and how we express this universal human emotion through art. The "Frame Nature" exhibition coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston's "Blooming Arts Festival"—a beloved annual spring tradition at the museum.

Picturing Isabella | Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

“The Images of Isabella” traces the complex and ever-changing relationship between Isabella Stuart Gardner and her public image and legacy through a lifetime of photographs. How would you imagine Isabella Stuart Gardner? This museum founder grew up with photography, but as her fame grew, she began to avoid the camera. She began to meticulously curate her images, much like carefully arranging a museum gallery. Through her photographic work throughout her life, we can trace the complex and evolving relationship between Isabella and her image, fame, and legacy. In her youth, she photographed in a style typical of the time, often formal. As she aged, she deliberately cultivated a public image that was both dramatic and enigmatic. Even when she agreed to be photographed, she only collaborated with people she knew and trusted, often wearing a veil or with her back to the camera, leaving only an impression. The book *The Image of Isabella* compiles photographs from her teenage years and travels, candid shots with friends and pets, posed studio photos, newspaper clippings, and other archival materials to paint a portrait of Isabella Stuart Gardner. Her aversion to the camera makes her museum her most enduring image.

The Banner Project: Mark Thomas Gibson | Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Mark Thomas Gibson (born 1980) describes himself as an "American history painter," drawing inspiration from sources as diverse as comic books, Renaissance painting, and late 19th-century editorial cartoons. His "Banner Project" is the largest expansion yet of his "Town Crier" series, which draws on the pre-modern tradition of collective speaking, when town criers publicly announced laws and news.

Innovators and Influencers:Chinese Women Artists of the Past Millennium | Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Throughout history, women have used a variety of techniques, styles, and media to create beautiful objects for family, friends, and communities. This exhibition showcases paintings and textiles created by Chinese women or inspired by them over the past four centuries. These works defy easy categorization, as the artists who created them each followed their own artistic paths, opening up new aesthetic opportunities for future generations. Although the names and works of many female artists have been lost to history, the surviving paintings and other objects, such as those exhibited here, still demonstrate the profound influence these women had on their contemporaries and posterity. Visitors can appreciate these diverse works and learn about the indelible contributions these women—innovators and quietly pioneering artists—made to the history of art in China and the world.

Declarations Boston | Old South Church in Boston

A landmark musical event for America's 250th Anniversary. Ensemble Altera, one of today’s most compelling professional chamber choirs, presents the world premiere of Declarations , a major new choral work by Piers Connor Kennedy. Spanning 75 minutes without intermission, Declarations is a bold and deeply human meditation on the Declaration of Independence—its creation, ideals, contradictions, and ongoing legacy. Drawing on a rich tapestry of texts, from Thomas Jefferson and Langston Hughes, to contemporary voices including Tracy K. Smith, dg nanouk okpik, and William Ashford, among others, the work refracts 250 years of history through a modern, emotionally powerful lens. About Ensemble Altera Praised for its “profound expression… guided by musicality and taste” and hailed by the BBC as “something extraordinary,” Ensemble Altera has quickly emerged as a leading voice in choral music. Under the direction of Christopher Lowrey, the ensemble is known for luminous, precise vocal blend, bold, imaginative programming, and performances that seek emotional clarity. Their recordings have earned international acclaim, including the German Record Critics’ Award, and their work reaches audiences worldwide through radio and streaming platforms.
