Experience the serene and contemplative art of dance at the upcoming Contemplative Dance Practice: Build-A-Floor Celebration Festival in Northampton. Led by Jennifer Polins, the event will be held at APE@Hawley on May 3, 2024. This festival pays homage to the legacy of Nancy Stark Smith, Steve Paxton, and Contact Improvisation, with a special focus on honoring dance floors. Participants will engage in the Contemplative Dance Practice (CDP), developed by Barbara Dilley in the 1970s and continued by Nancy Stark Smith. The practice involves silent meditation, movement with eyes closed and open, all guided by the sound of a meditation bell. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable attire and bring a journal for this introspective experience. Jennifer Polins, renowned for her expertise in contact improvisation, will lead the event, welcoming individuals of all experience levels. The festival operates on a donation-based sliding scale, with proceeds supporting participating artists. Whether you are new to dance or a seasoned practitioner, the Contemplative Dance Practice offers a unique opportunity for quiet reflection and movement exploration.
