Craft & Walk - A Celebration of "Crossing Beacon" at The 4800 Gateway is an evening of celebration and crafts in honor of the new public art installation. Hosted by Hazelwood Local and Hazelwood Initiative, this family-friendly event is designed to commemorate the neighborhood's latest addition, Crossing Beacon. The festivities will commence with an introduction by Pittsburgh-based artist, Ben Grubb, followed by a guided walk down 2nd Avenue led by Hazelwood historian JaQuay Edward Carter, offering participants an opportunity to view the installation up close. Afterward, guests will return to Community Kitchen PGH where they can indulge in complimentary bites, warm beverages, and engage in various craft activities. There will be an array of free activities to enjoy, including textile waterfall wall art with A/R Workshop, Crossing Beacon custom ornament painting, pennant screenprinting with Arts Excursions Unlimited, cookie decorating with Community Kitchen PGH, custom Hazelwood totes, a behind-the-scenes look at how the art piece was created, and partner information booths, among other exciting offerings. The Crossing Beacon art piece, located on the second and third floor exterior walls of 4800 Second Avenue, symbolizes the entrance to the neighborhood's commercial corridor and the adjacent Hazelwood Green. Paying homage to the area's history as the entrance to the former J&L steel mill, the artwork incorporates motifs that highlight the resilience of the Monongahela River and its significance to Hazelwood. The temporary installation portrays a crossing beacon, a symbol of river navigation, representing the merging of past, present, and future, as well as celebrating the endurance of life, the river's blessings, and the strength of the community. Craft & Walk - A Celebration of "Crossing Beacon" at The 4800 Gateway will take place in Pittsburgh on December 9, 2023, at the Community Kitchen Pittsburgh located at 107 Flowers Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15207. Admission to the event is free, providing a wonderful opportunity for individuals to appreciate and engage with this remarkable public art installation.
