Details

Discover the untold story of Deptford and its role in the British Transatlantic Slave Trade at the upcoming event, Deptford Dockyard's Buried History with Jody Burton. Join Jody Burton, a passionate librarian and historian, as she sheds light on this overlooked chapter of history. Drawing from local sources and notable texts such as Longest Journey: A History of Black Lewisham by Joan Anim-Addo, The Autobiography of Olaudah Equiano, and Laura Shepherd-Robinson’s historical fiction novel Blood and Sugar, Jody will delve into Deptford's hidden past and ignite a conversation about the representation of Black history in current British literature. The event will take place at Deptford Lounge - Studio, located at 9 Giffin Street, London, SE8 4RJ on March 16, 2024. Admission is free, but spaces are limited, so make sure to reserve your spot. This event is wheelchair accessible, with accessible toilets, and will be BSL interpreted. Deptford Lounge also offers Changing Place facilities, an induction loop, and welcomes assistance dogs. For more information and to book your free ticket, visit deptfordlounge.org.uk/access. If you can no longer attend, please cancel your ticket to allow others to join. Help support the future of Deptford Literature Festival by donating to Spread the Word, the charity that organizes the festival.
