Arvizu's contributions to the Chicano rock and soul movement have solidified her status as a significant figure in the East L.A. music scene. Maria Elena Yepes, an educator, writer, and community activist, has dedicated her professional life to expanding higher education opportunities for underserved communities in Los Angeles. Her extensive experience led to her appointment to the Los Angeles County Board of Education in 2009. Yepes has also been an integral part of Plaza Community Services, the oldest non-profit organization in Los Angeles, since 2012. Additionally, she wrote the compelling libretto for the mini-opera "El Circo Anahuac." David Reyes, a Chicano music historian and composer, has an impressive background in classical music composition. He produced the acclaimed three-CD set "Brown Eyed Soul" for Rhino Records and served as Associate Producer for the PBS documentary "Chicano Rock." Reyes's expertise extends to his role as co-author of "Land of a Thousand Dances" and co-curator of the exhibit "Roots of the Eastside Sound." His composition, the captivating mini-opera "El Circo Anahuac," beautifully showcases his talent. Steven Loza, a distinguished professor of ethnomusicology at UCLA, brings his wealth of knowledge and experience to this panel discussion. With over three decades of teaching and research, Loza has made significant contributions to the field.
