Break and paint your own bowl with gold using the ancient Japanese technique of Kintsugi. Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery. If a bowl is broken, rather than discarding the pieces, the fragments are put back and the cracks are adorned with gold. There are no attempts to hide the damage, instead, it is highlighted. The practice has come to represent the idea that beauty can be found in imperfection. The breakage is an opportunity and applying this kind of thinking to instances of failure in our own lives can be helpful. Join Shaker Heritage Society and hvkintsugi in this crowd favorite! This workshop will be led by local Art Therapist Tara DeLuca. During the workshop you will connect with your bowl, break it, confront the damage and take ownership of the pieces that remain by glueing them back together. The bowl will be changed forever, just as each person is through their own personal experiences. This is a calming, shared experience. It is an excellent way to participate in self care. “Instead of masking the flaws, a Japanese way of seeing things is that by highlighting the cracks, the piece becomes stronger, more beautiful, and easier to use.” All materials are included! You may bring one piece of broken pottery to use in the workshop, but we ask that you participate in the breaking and painting of the supplied bowl. Explore the expressive colors of percussive sounds, utilizing non-standard instruments Prism Percussion explores the expressive colors of percussive sounds utilizing non-standard instruments and seeks to champion works by BIPOC, Women, and Queer composers. Based in San Francisco-based, this percussion duo was founded in 2018 by Divesh Karamchandani and Elizabeth Hall. Since their inaugural performance, Prism Percussion has continuously curated projects showcasing new works for percussion duo written by underrepresented composers. Their presence on stage is "both musically and visually stunning" affirms Jessica Balik of San Francisco Classical Voice.  Performance includes a World Premiere from composer Haruka Fujii! Very best, Calliope: East Bay Music & Arts Board of Directors Artist Profiles Divesh Karamchandani (founder) Divesh Karamchandani is a San Francisco-based percussionist and Coordinator of Percussion at San Jose State University.  He is the Principal Percussionist of One Found Sound, Prism Percussion's co-founder, and Orphic Percussion's newest member.  Karamchandani’s other notable engagements include the San Francisco Symphony, New Century Chamber Orchestra, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, San Jose Chamber Orchestra, Berkeley Symphony, Stockton Symphony, Opera San Jose, and Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera, among other ensembles. Karamchandani advocates contemporary music and seeks to champion new works, especially by underrepresented composers. His firm belief in a more equitable and diverse artistic community has led to commissioning, premiering, and  recording new compositions through his solo ventures and partnership with Prism Percussion.  Karamchandani is honored to be acknowledged as a Marimba One Educational Artist and proudly endorses Marimba One instruments.  He studied under the tutelage of Jack Van Geem, Jacob Nissly, James Lee Wyatt III, Chris Woodham, and Allen Brown. Elizabeth Hall (founder) Based in San Francisco-based, this percussion duo was founded in 2018 by Divesh Karamchandani and Elizabeth Hall. She has collaborated with the Magik*Magik Orchestra, yMusic, Sō Percussion, eighth blackbird, New Century Chamber Orchestra, Mainly Mozart All-Star Festival Orchestra, and the San Francisco Symphony. Ms. Nakamura is a graduate of UCLA and San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Jimmy Chan (guest artist) Jimmy Chan, originally from Hong Kong, is a versatile solo, chamber, and orchestral percussionist based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has performed with ensembles including the San Francisco Symphony, California Symphony, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Marin Symphony, Oakland Symphony, Sacramento Philharmonic. A Marimba One Artist, Chan has appeared on prestigious stages worldwide, including Royal Albert Hall and Walt Disney Concert Hall. He has been featured as a concerto soloist with the Billings Symphony and Colburn Orchestra, and has appeared as a guest artist at the Bellingham Festival of Music and Stanford University. In chamber music, he is percussionist with One Found Sound, a conductorless chamber orchestra in San Francisco. Chan is the percussion ensemble director and faculty at California State University, East Bay.  Haruka Fujii (featured composer) Multi-percussionist Haruka Fujii has become one of the most prominent solo percussionists and marimbists of her generation. Since 2010 Ms. Fujii has performed as an artist of the Grammy Award winning Silkroad Ensemble, joining a group of international musicians founded by Yo-Yo Ma and now serves as the Associate Artistic Director alongside with the artistic director Rhiannon Giddens. She is a member of Utari Percussion Duo, a duet project with her sister Rika, which she has written several pieces for including Small Chat I & II.   Ms. Fujii has recently joined the percussion faculty of San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and has been a frequent guest instructor at several international percussion festivals. School Culture Leader Workshop We define a School Culture Leader as the individual who creates a strong, vibrant school culture in which students thrive. This role has many names: Dean of Students, Assistant Principal, a House or Hall Principal, Dean of Culture, Social Worker, Guidance Counselor, Parent Advocate—it can even be the job of the Principal herself. Whatever the name it takes in a given school, the School Culture Leader’s (SCL) role is vital to student and teacher success. It entails ensuring that all classrooms have a strong foundation to enable rigorous and engaging academic instruction to thrive. The SCL’s role ensures that stakeholders experience and uphold a culture that is warm, supportive and inclusive. As schools work to define, establish and/or strengthen their schools’ culture, we are offering this workshop which is designed to build the capacity of School Culture Leaders, Deans, Assistant Principals and/or their managers to lead strong school culture. TRAINING WILL INCLUDE: Insights into the effective application of techniques by school culture leaders Practice activities that will strengthen school culture leaders’ capacity to apply effective techniques in their schools The opportunity to plan how you will implement these techniques in your school’s professional development program Feedback during practice to help school culture leaders master the techniques Cohort building among school culture leaders to promote networking and future collaboration WE WILL ANALYZE AND PRACTICE: Crucial culture-building moments that deans own including: Public Deaning, Private Deaning, Family and Stakeholder Communication, and Coaching & Development Artifacts submitted by participants focused on culture building moments WHO SHOULD ATTEND: This workshop is for school culture leaders, deans, and other key personnel who shape and build school cultures. In addition to our interactive learning sessions, cohort participants who choose to license the materials can also expect the following resources: Access to a selection of session videos, PPTs, participant handouts, practice activities and our entire School Culture Leader/Deans PD implementation suite upon purchasing the licensing agreement. Please note: In order to protect privacy, some videos may not be shared as a part of your licensing agreement. Join us in Albany to hear from students, families, advocates, and legislators on dyslexia and literacy. What: Dyslexia Awareness Day builds support for the dyslexic community and those with related learning disabilities. We share strategies and experiences, and feature legislative solutions. Who: Allies include parents, students, advocates, educators, and legislators from throughout New York State. Why: With only 35% of our fourth graders reading proficiently, we are leaving far too many students behind. Dyslexia is common - in every class of 30 students, 5 or 6 of them have dyslexia, but most of them will not be identified for years, and many never are. Let’s work together to change that.
