Free Canoeing on the Gowanus Canal | Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club Boathouse
165 2nd Street where 2nd St. dead ends into canal, Brooklyn, NY 11231

Free Canoeing on the Gowanus Canal | Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club Boathouse

Join the Gowanus Dredgers for free, self-guided canoe trips on the Gowanus Canal. No experience required! Hop into a Gowanus Dredgers canoe and paddle at your own pace inside the protected Gowanus Canal. Enjoy discovering the canal’s unique mix of wildlife and urban waterway infrastructure, practice your paddling skills, or take a guided audio tour and learn more about the history, cleanup and revitalization of our favorite urban waterway. We'll outfit you with a life jacket (which must be worn at all times) and paddle, offer some basic instruction on how to paddle and safety tips on how to use a canoe, and help you set off on your own self-guided journey. Trips may be limited to 20 minutes if there’s a crowd — but usually we just expect you to return to the dock 15 min. prior to closing. Who can participate? Paddling is for everyone! Free walk-up canoeing is open to all ages. Groups, families, solo paddlers, and intrepid first dates are all welcome! Minors require a guardian's signature to participate, and all participants must sign a waiver What should I wear? Dress for the weather: wear sunscreen, hats, and bring a water bottle — and bring layers if there's a breeze! Close-toed shoes are recommended, and wear clothing you don’t mind potentially being splashed. Can I volunteer? Yes! Select a "Volunteer" ticket at check-out. All walk-up paddle events are 4 hours long. We have two volunteer shifts per scheduled event. The first runs from 30-minutes before the start of the program through the first two hours. The second shift begins at the middle of the program through 30 minutes after the end of the scheduled time. Information Source: Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club | eventbrite

Shrek Entirely From Memory | littlefield

No scripts... No Rehearsals.... Ten Bones Theatre Company ( www.tenbones.org ) is thrilled to be back at littlefield for our next installment of the Entirely From Memory ( www.entirelyfrommemory.com ) series! Performers will attempt (and most likely fail) to recreate "Shrek", without the aid of scripts, rehearsals, or sobriety. All they will have will be their memory, a recent viewing of the films, and a lot of wigs. How certain are we that they'll succeed? So certain that we're making it harder for them.-Performers won't know what role they are playing until they get onstage.-Performers must incorporate lines written by the audience.-Performers must incorporate any sound effect played by the tech booth. -One lucky audience member will be given a horn that they can honk four times. Once honked, the actors must create a deleted scene that has no business being in the movie but makes perfect sense given where they are in the story. Love the movie? We got you covered. Never seen it? We got you covered. You think you saw it once and you kind of remember it? You're probably in the show. Performers: Willy Appelman, Eric Austin, Herbert Benjamin, Regina Carregha, Ryan Chittaphong, Thomas Costello, Michael James Duran, Ben Furnas, Molly Gaebe, Lena Gloria, Claire Gresham, Kyra Jackson, Alexis Lambright, Elizabeth Leimkuhler, Pete McElligott, Nick Piacente, Austin Sanders, Andy Schneeflock, Scott Thomas, and Ava Wolesky Information Source: littlefield | eventbrite

Fort Defiance Park: Where Open Space and Climate Resilience Meets History | Waterfront Museum

Revisit the historical significance of Fort Defiance as a key Revolutionary War fortification and what it could mean for our future. A Climate Justice Action Plan for Red Hook must honor where we come from — and Fort Defiance is where the story begins. Red Hook is home to one of the most overlooked Revolutionary War sites in New York City, and it may also hold a key to our climate-resilient future. Designated in 2025 as one of the Historic Districts Council's "Six to Celebrate," Fort Defiance is both a sacred site of early American resistance and a strategic opportunity for modern-day resilience and community space. In this webinar, we will: Revisit the historical significance of Fort Defiance as a key Revolutionary War fortification and what it meant for the defense of Brooklyn and New York Explore how the site's elevation and location make it a natural refuge and staging ground for climate adaptation and storm response Present concepts for nature-based design, public memory, and multi-functional green infrastructure that could transform the site into a community resource for the 21st century Share updates on the "Six to Celebrate" program and the broader push for recognition and stewardship of Red Hook's cultural and ecological assets Fort Defiance is more than a park — it's a symbol of resilience, then and now. Integrating this site into Red Hook's Climate Justice Action Plan means ensuring that history, green infrastructure, and community identity are woven into every planning decision ahead.
