Onsite Gallery is proud to present its inaugural Black History Month annual guest lecture, featuring esteemed curator Janet Dees. The lecture, titled "Notes Towards a Black Feminist Curatorial Practice: Contemplation, 'Difficult Knowledge,' and 'Radical Friendship'," will take place on Thursday, February 22, 2024, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at OCAD University in Toronto, Ontario.

Janet Dees, a highly regarded curator and art historian, will provide a unique perspective on contemporary curatorial practices, exploring the intersection of art, history, and archives and how contemporary artists engage with these elements. Her lecture promises to spark meaningful conversations about the transformative power of art and the importance of embracing diverse perspectives within the curatorial realm.

This enlightening event is co-presented with the Centre for the Study of Black Canadian Diaspora, underscoring the significance of fostering dialogues on Black history, art, and culture within and across our communities.

Janet Dees currently serves as the Steven and Lisa Munster Tananbaum Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at The Block Museum of Art, Northwestern University. Her research and curatorial work focus on the ways in which contemporary artists engage with history and archives, as well as artists' interest in transformational practices and inclusive museum methodologies.

The CN Tower, also known as the Canadian National Tower or the CN Tower, is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In 1995, it was recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the World by the American Society of Civil Engineers and is a member of the World Federation of Great Towers.
The &quot;CN&quot; in its original name was an abbreviation for &quot;Canadian National&quot; and is now an abbreviation for &quot;Canada&#39;s National,&quot; though neither name is commonly used. Standing 553.33 meters tall, it is the fifth tallest free-standing structure in the world. Considered a landmark in Toronto, it attracts over two million visitors annually. Since its completion in 1976, it has been consistently listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the tallest building until surpassed by the Burj Khalifa (Dubai). However, technically, the CN Tower is not a building, but a non-structural structure. The CN Tower is a landmark building in Toronto and the second-tallest telecommunications tower in the world. It boasts nearly 1,700 metal steps and stands roughly as tall as a hundred-story building. In 1995, the CN Tower was recognized by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

In late summer and early autumn, Niagara Falls is at its peak flow, with the rushing waters and newly colored autumn leaves creating a breathtaking scene. The most worthwhile viewpoint is the Horseshoe Falls observation deck on the Canadian side &ndash; directly facing the powerful spray of the falls, where you can often witness the spectacular sight of a double rainbow spanning the azure waters. Descending the falls path to the Maid of the Mist boarding point, you can experience the ultimate feeling of the falls&#39; power by walking through the cool mist amidst the thunderous roar of the water. If time permits, climbing the Skylon Tower for a panoramic view and watching the sunset gild the rushing waters is an even more awe-inspiring and unforgettable experience.

The moment you step into Casa Loma, you&#39;re transported back to the days of the aristocracy of the early 20th century. Climbing the spiral staircase to the tower is a bit leg-wrenching, but it&#39;s well worth it&mdash;the rooftop view offers breathtaking views of the Toronto skyline. The underground wine cellars and secret passageways are truly adventurous, and I can&#39;t help but imagine the banquets the owners once hosted there. However, some of the furniture in the rooms looks a bit worn, and the signage is a bit blurry. My favorite part is the garden, where the roses are in full bloom in the summer, and it&#39;s so relaxing to sit on a bench and just relax. If you enjoy historical architecture and photography, this is a great place to take photos!

The moment I entered the Art Gallery of Ontario, I was captivated by the grand lobby&#39;s spiral staircase&mdash;the modern structure and classical exhibits so seamlessly blended! The exhibition of Canadian Indigenous art on the second floor held my attention the longest. The works, which used traditional symbols to speak to contemporary issues, were incredibly powerful. Occasionally, stumbling upon a Rodin sculpture or a Monet water lily, I felt like finding an Easter egg in a maze. The contemporary exhibition hall on the top floor was a bit difficult to navigate, but the twisted metal fixtures and whimsical fluorescent lighting made for photo ops. My only regret was that the lattes in the cafe were a bit pricey, but sitting by the high windows and gazing out at the streetscape was well worth it. It&#39;s a perfect place to spend a leisurely afternoon.
