The Kendo Beginners Course in Southampton is an 8-week program that provides comprehensive training and guidance for individuals interested in joining kendo sparring and becoming part of the club. Kendo, a modern Japanese martial art rooted in traditional swordsmanship, focuses on striking opponents with a bamboo sword while wearing protective armor. This practice emphasizes character development, discipline, perseverance, and respect for others. The Southampton Kendo Club warmly welcomes adults of all ages and skill levels, creating a supportive environment for learning and skill enhancement. The course, which runs for 8 weeks, takes place every Monday from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. Designed to equip participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to safely engage in kendo sparring and train alongside club members, the course covers a range of topics, including dojo etiquette, basic attacks, kata (set forms) practice, creating opportunities to attack, maintaining control after an attack, scoring valid points, and free sparring in armor. The club will provide all necessary equipment, but participants are encouraged to wear suitable sports clothing (e.g., t-shirt and jogging bottoms) and bring water. Upon completion of the course, participants will have the opportunity to join the main class and begin training in kendo armor. The cost of the course is £20, which includes 3 months' membership of the club and the British Kendo Association (BKA), including insurance coverage.
