Details

Uncover the secret of the success of the Haagse School art movement and embark on a journey to a time of fishing boats, fishermen, and the early railway lines. Around 1860, The Hague experienced a flourishing art scene. Renowned artists such as Jozef Israëls, the Maris brothers, Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch, and Hendrik Willem Mesdag settled in the city and depicted the world around them in innovative ways. Most paintings from the Haagse School showcase the Dutch landscape. With the availability of pre-made paint in tubes and the expansion of new railway lines, artists could venture outdoors to work. They created numerous oil studies on-site, which served as inspiration during the colder winter months in the studio. While the landscapes were realistically painted, the focus was on capturing light and atmosphere. A famous quote by Willem Maris states: "I do not paint cows, I paint light." Every district in The Hague hosts evening openings at the Kunstmuseum, featuring free bus transportation, drinks, music, and a stage program. This lecture serves as preparation for the (free) museum visit on Wednesday, March 20th, from the Scheveningen and Segbroek districts. Interested individuals can reserve a spot for the lecture promptly, as availability is limited. The Kunstmuseum Den Haag is hosting this event.
