Join Ana Lypen for her artist talk titled "Ukrainian Decolonization or Why don't you know any Ukrainian artists?" The average Western individual may not be familiar with Ukrainian artists, but they are likely aware of Russian figures such as Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Tchaikovsky. In this lecture, Ana Lypen will explore Ukrainian history as a subdued colony, shedding light on why Russia continues to hold a cultural spotlight despite its violent past. By examining historical narratives, the talk will also showcase the experiences of modern Russian-speaking Ukrainians and how their identity has been affected by full-scale invasion. This event aims to unravel the reasons behind the lack of awareness of Ukrainian artists and emphasize the importance of decolonization from within. Ana Lypen, an accomplished singer from Kyiv, Ukraine, now residing in Michigan, brings her passion for Ukrainian art and its history to the stage. Don't miss this opportunity to gain insight into Ukrainian culture and its representation in the West. The event will take place at Gutman Gallery in Ann Arbor on January 14, 2024. Admission is free.
