Discover the rich tradition and contemporary practice of wireworking in Slovakia through the experiences of Fulbright Scholar, artist, and educator Kristin Tollefson. Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Slovakian wireworking as Tollefson shares her insights and images from her five-month stay in Central Europe. During her time in Slovakia, Tollefson explored the art of wireworking, known as 'drotárstvo' in Slovak, which originated in the picturesque mountains bordering Czechia and Poland. This ancient craft, which has been recognized as Intangible Heritage by UNESCO, holds a special place in Slovakian culture. Tollefson's journey took her to Žilina, a city in northern Slovakia, where she uncovered the deep-rooted significance of wireworking and its relevance to contemporary discussions in art and society. As part of this fascinating exploration, Kristin Tollefson will be conducting an Introduction to Sculptural Wireworking workshop on January 20, from 1-4pm. Join her to gain hands-on experience and delve further into the world of wireworking. Kristin Tollefson is an accomplished artist whose work bridges the gap between people and their environment through sculpture, installation, performance, and jewelry. With an MFA in Metalsmithing from the esteemed Cranbrook Academy of Art, Tollefson has taught at renowned institutions such as Cornish College of the Arts and Pratt Fine Arts Center. Her expertise as a teaching artist has taken her around the world, sharing her knowledge and passion for art. Tollefson has been the recipient of prestigious grants and awards, including Fulbright (Slovakia and Iceland), The American-Scandinavian Foundation, and Artist Trust.
