Ubon Ratchathani is a province and the same-named city located in Thailand in South East Asia. It is one of the big four cities in the group of 20 provinces in the northeastern region of Thailand. Located along the Mun River, also called as the Moon River (a tributary of the Mekong River), Ubon Ratchathani is 615 Km. away from Bangkok. It is also known as Ubon in short meaning “royal lotus city”. Ubon is the capital and the administrative hub of the Ubon Ratchathani province and hence is an important place in Thailand. Ubon has a tropical wet and dry climate with rainfall from April to October with dry and warm winters. The city was found in the 18th century and over the period of time has emerged as a city with a strong Buddhist population and rich in Buddhist customs and traditions. The city has its share in the history and was a part of the Franco-Thai war during 1940. Ubon grew significantly during the WW-II when the Japanese army brought British POWs here. During the Vietnam War, it again gained prominence with the US using it as an air force base and constructed the Ubon Royal Thai Air Force base that is currently being used as a public and commercial airport.

The city is well known for the Candle Festival that is organized to welcome the rainy season retreat for the Buddhist Monks and has a rich Lao architecture influence on the religious buildings across the city.
