History

Archaeological findings show that Madrid has been occupied since prehistoric times. There are remains of Carpetani settlement, Roman Villas and many more. Madrid became the capital of Spain under Phillip II. Carlos III had the largest influence on Madrid in terms of architecture. He was nicknamed as Madrid’s best. He was known for extensive building and modernization programs in the city. During the economic boom in Spain from 1959 to 1973, the city experienced extensive development in terms of wealth and population and became the largest GDP city in Spain and ranked 3rd in Europe. After the death of Franco and the start of the democratic regime, the 1978 constitution of Spain confirmed Madrid as its capital.
