Yantai is a port city located in Eastern China’s Shandong province and is one of the main ports in the region. It is covered by the Penglai Pavilion to the north, which is a clifftop pagoda that overlooks the Bohai Strait. The pagoda is centuries old and is one of the telling factors of the region. The eastern part of the city is connected to the mainland via Zhifu Island, which is where the Neolithic artifacts are present. History of Yantai:

Yantai was inhabited by indigenous people until they were colonized by the Zhou and were later annexed by Qi in 567 BC. The Zhifu area didn’t have much but small unwalled villages of fishermen, till the 19th Century. After the Second Opium War, the Empire had to open many more treaty ports under the Treaty of Tianjin. The port found Zhifu as the main commercial area and a harbor was opened un May 1861. The city soon got its own customs house and a large number of foreign settlers, namely the British called the town, home. 

Soon, 16 other nations established their own consulates in the town and it was expanded with the help of proper streets and some well-built houses as well. There were even Catholic and Protestant churches constructed.

The main traders in the region were the Americans and British and principal imports included the likes of iron, opium, woolen and cotton goods. Exports included the likes of soybean oil, vegetables, vermicelli, and raw silk among others. The city was renamed Yantai in 1949 and was opened as an ice-free port in 1984. 

Once the People’s Republic of China was established, Yantai was given the status of a city, in 1950. The city has significant strategic importance to the defense of China and is one of its most important seats in the Eastern half of the country. Dalian as well, which is opposite the Bohai Sea are primary coastal guard points for the Chinese government.

The Yantai South Railway Station is around 15 km and they, too, operate high-speed trains from different parts of the country. You can also travel by bus to Yantai, and there are over 50 bus routes available. It is convenient for you to get around. The Changyu Wine Culture Museum is one place you must visit if you’re in Yantai. Established back in 1992, this museum is located at Liuma Road and is the only wine museum that is specialized in China.
