We stayed at the Painswick for two nights to celebrate my birthday - a surprise organised by my wife. What can I say but wow. An amazing hotel, with the immediate bonus that we had a room upgrade to a Terrace room. This had a lovely view out over the valley and was a very comfortable space with such things as a small selection of books, a jar of homemade cookies, robes in the spacious bathroom and more. The hotel itself was very nice with two comfortable lounges and a lovely restaurant. There is also a small room with a pool table and for warmer weather a lovely outdoor terrace and balcony. We ate in the restaurant for my birthday dinner and the food was superb. I had the best venison I have eaten in a long time and the sharing apple tarte tatin was delicious. Breakfast on both mornings was excellent, a good choice of a la carte hot items are accompanied by a small but perfect buffet of cereals, fruit, bread, pastries and jams. The only downside is that the homemade crumpets were so fantastic I can never look at a shop bought one the same way again! Overall a fabulous place and would happily visit again! The car park is small and access can be challenging - but this is an old (and presumably listed) building.
