We thought Écrin d'Auvergne excellent. The setting is pastoral, overlooking a hay meadow which runs downhill to a rippling stream. Although there are other cottages nearby, the sense of privacy is absolute. The space itself is open-plan and faintly Nordic in its design concept; a bedroom area opening on to a small well equipped kitchen, sliding doors opening the whole on to a verandah, with a Nordic hot tub for which we were really grateful in the cool of the evenings. The shower area is terrific - and has given us some redesign ideas for our own home. Breakfast arrived daily at 0830 in a picnic basket, comprising jams, compotes, bread and croissants, yogurt, charcuterie, muesli. Simple, but it never ceased to appeal to the child in us, and it set us up for the day. Pierre-Éric, the host, was terrific. Discreet and helpful, available when we needed him, and always easily contacted.. It was a really good base for exploring the central Auvergne, although truth to tell, my personal highlight was the fresh water swimming at Lake Lastioulle, just a few minute's drive away. One final point. Be courageous with whatever French you speak. It is really appreciated and it goes a long way.
