Our 2-night stay at Chaozhou Gaoyang Jiujia Inn was easily one of the most memorable parts of our recent trip to Chaozhou with my dad.
The inn itself is a beautifully preserved 90-year-old heritage house, where many of the original beams and structures still remain intact and lovingly maintained. Some parts bear scars from the Cultural Revolution, a quiet reminder of history and a little heartbreaking to see — but even through that, you can still glimpse the grace and beauty the house must once have held in full.
The rooms were clean, modern, simple, and thoughtfully done. Nothing excessive or flashy, just comfortable in a way that feels homely, genuine and considered.
But what truly made this place special was the host. She's warm, sincere, hospitable, and incredibly kind. We were welcomed with fruits and tea, had many lovely chats, and heard stories about the history of the house and the old neighbourhood around it. The host also recommended wonderful nearby local eats, and was especially thoughtful and patient towards my elderly dad throughout our stay.
This is not a polished luxury hotel trying to impress. It feels real, unpretentious, soulful. Hidden quietly behind an old street, full of charm and character.
Part of me wants to recommend this place to everyone, and another part selfishly wants to keep it a secret. Discover for yourself, a true hidden gem.
