Holiday Inn Express Charleston-Civic Center

We were having a hard time finding hotels in Eastern Kentucky/Southern West Virginia. It seems that area is a black hole for hotels and the 2 we passed were packed on a Wednesday night at 8pm. So we had to drive to Charleston 3 hours away to find a room. The Holiday Inn Express Civic Center was still open after midnight and we were welcomed by a friendly desk person. The parking lot looked a bit sketchy, like it was last paved 10 years ago. But that was our only negative. The public spaces were spotless and up to date. Elevators were fast, quiet, and there was no waiting. Our key worked fine. The room was clean, smelled great, and the AC was quiet and worked well. The bed was very comfortable with large fluffy pillows. The TV was a 60” flat screen and cable was fine. The bathroom was large, plenty hot water. Well lit. Large mirror. Only 2 towels, but that was OK. The room was larger than usual. Refrigerator and Microwave. A large desk area where I am currently writing this review. The internet is great. Breakfast was great. We liked the coffee and they had an Equal-like sweetener. We had cheese omelettes, sausage links, bagels, and a Cinnamon Roll. All very good. They also had a pancake machine and cereal/juice/fruit. So no bad marks here. All the news is good at the Holiday Inn Express Civic Center

The hotel itself was okay - it could definitely use some TLC. The AC in our room was very old, the tub could use caulking\updated. However, that's not my biggest complaint...my biggest concern is a staff member at the hotel by the name of Tasha (the hotel bartender) she was shockingly annoyed when I approached her for a final drink (a few minutes before 10pm). I could tell that she mentally debated if she wanted to help me and told me her cashier's drawer automatically shut down at 10pm and that she may not be able to get us drinks; no greeting, no thank you. But 20 minutes later (10:18pm to be exact) a white gentle walks up to the bar and she HAPPILY serves him a beer and cracks jokes and thanks him. I found that to be quite disturbing! Maybe she needs some racial sensitivity training??? Horrible experience and if she can't treat all people equal, then maybe she needs another job somewhere else where she has no interaction with customers! The rest of the staff was awesome but Tasha needs help, training and\or a new job.

Stayed one night while driving through, so I selected this hotel for location, value and reliable brand. Parking, Check in and check out were easy. Room was incredibly spacious and clean. Even though the hotel abuts a busy train track I could not hear any train noises while in the room. Slept great. The area where the hotel is located is easy to get to from the highway, but is mixed use (housing, churches, industrial and schools). Was relieved to see security regularly patrolling the hotel area. Since I arrived around 9pm, the area restaurants were closed. Luckily there was an open Krogers within a five minute drive. Breakfast was easy and uncrowded. Would stay again.

1st rate. Room and property was very clean. Staff was courteous and helpful. Would definitely stay here again. Staff suggested a good restaurant for dinner and we found a great ice cream shop for dessert. Breakfast was great. Hot food (make your own waffles), fresh fruit, yogurt & cereal, coffee, juices & milk. They also provided to go breakfast bags.

Courtyard Charleston Downtown/Civic Center

This hotel was spacious and clean. The surrounding area leaves much to be desired but isn’t the hotels fault. We appreciated the indoor pool being open late to give our children something to do. Breakfast was not free, but was fine. We would definitely stay here again if we found ourselves in Charleston. The staff was exceptional.
